Heya pplz,
Just wanted to hear from anyone out there who has had the 3rd gear grind problem COME BACK after fixing?
I posted about this about a year ago when I first got the problem. I went to the dealership, and they "fixed it" after haivng the car in teh shop for 3.5 weeks!
Anyway... week after I get the car back I am driving from Melbourne to Sydney, with 110km/h limits, of course I do a few fast shifts at the redline of 2nd... guess what? Grind!
OK so I take it to a dealer in Sydney (Rick Damelian), ask them to look at it. They open it up, 3rd gear AND 2nd gear snchro need replacing as well as a few other parts. (They replaced 3rd gear synchro first time around in Melbourne). OK, it's now been 6 months and guess what? 3rd gear grinding AGAIN! And no, I have not tracked the car, I have not modified it (I got the dealer to put in an Exedy clutch firsrt time they were replacing the grind as my clutch was worn).
I am taking it to Rick Damelian again, and will ask for a new gearbox altogether. I had the car off road for 7-8 weeks last year because of this ****.
Anyway, I am done bitchin' As I said, anyone had the problem re-occur? (as I know a lot had it once!)
Cheers

I had my 3rd gear die on me...then all of a sudden 2nd started going...then 5th decided to go along for the ride..
I got pissed and bought a brand new tranny.....
6months later.... after I opened it up and put my KAAZ LSD in and went to my 1st track event that season...
Third started to grind again.
Needless to say I was pissed..
Opened it up and replaced 3rd gear syncro and then changed out the KAAZ and put in Quaife.... Filled it up with Honda MTF.... another mistake.
Fast forward another 6months after yet another track event and my **** starting grinding again..... Put some GM syncroshift into it and it all went away....shifts smoother than it ever did with Honda MTF.
I'm a firm believer in the GM stuff if you notice the tranny START to scratch....it by no means magically repairs stuff internally....

yes, the GM stuff is great. i had a small scratch way up top of 2nd gear into third, 10k miles after my trans was rebuilt by Payn Tech here in the states. I thoughoughly drained the honda MTF, flushed it with a quart of new 10w-30 oil, and put it Syncromesh. no more scratch. cleaned it up very nicely.
Its called GM Syncromesh , its basically GM's manual trans fluid. here in the states it costs 10 dollars a quart.

Once again, thanks for the info... does GM stand for General Motors? I know it's a stupid question, but I am finding it a bit hard tracking it down here in Aus. No one's heard of it.
Alternatively, do you guys know if I can buy it online somewhere?

i'm from melb....
my gear grindsssssssss tooooooooooo
where do u think i should take the car to... i mean which honda (in Melb)
I usually service my car at Garry and Warren Smith Honda in Oakleigh... but I dont think they are any good...
a long time ago, they made a dent to my civic and didnt admit and didnt wanna fix it...
and then, when i took my type r for some repairing, some bolts were missing, coz the technician forgot to put it back
U might wanna try this oil instead... (CASTROL SYNTRAX)
I havent tried it yet... coz I wanna get Honda to fix it coz my car is still under warranty hehehe

try tracking the stuff down at holden or hsv specialist, u want the stuff that goes into 6 spd HSV commodores or the V8 ss models.
I think shipping that oil is not easy, cause it is danger good. Damn, my trany got fixed last year and after driving 2 times on track again the syncro from 2nd to 3rd gear is damaged, grinds again. This seems to be a generl error. Anybody know where to get this GM stuff in Europe? Man I hate such things, the advertisment TV shows just sucks. YEAH JIM, LOOK, THIS OLD ENGINE RUNS AGAIN. OH YES BOB; IT IS SOOOO GREAT, AND WHEN YOU BUY NOW YOU GET 3 more BOTTLES OF GM ENGINE OIL AND FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
How about the HOnda Transmission Oil.. It is good for the transmission.. Is it a good idea to go autozone to buy the Syntrax Transmission Oil.. It wont hurt anything.. Am I right or wrong

boszyen - I got my gearbox done first time at Courtney & Patterson in Heidelberg. But they all suck. Take it Robert Lane first. Angelo is the Servicing Manager... I had a few run ins with him, but he's been quite good recently.
(Robert Lane on Nepean Hwy in Brighton)
MaxSE02 - HTO is *****.
Kavehman - called Holden dealer. Never heard of it
dumbasses. Will call a few HSV dealers/service places.
Cheers for the info!

3rd gear is a problem for everyone, it's the way the tranny is designed that's the problem, just do like everyone said and throw some GM Syncromesh in there and it should be fine

OK I found it!!!!!! In Sydney:
. Heartland Holden
65 Church St
Parramatta NSW 2150
Phone: 02 9204 6666 Fax: 02 9635 6346
Products/Services offered: HSV Retailer
Web Site: http://www.heartlandholden.com.au
Trading Times: 7.00 am - 6.00 pm
For Melbournites/interstaters just find your closest HSV dealer. The standard Holden dealers don't have ANY manual fluid.
Also... what the hell is a QUART? I got 3 bottles of 1Litre each. I assume that's enough for the ITR?

Yep, I had my synchros fixed last year at the dealership as well, for the same reasons as you guys....
I don't dog out my R like i used to in the past after i got it fixed... BUT once again it has started to grind in 3rd gear.. it really pisses me off...
