Default Why is my clutch so heavy?

I have a 2000 Acura EL (basically a Civic EX) with a D16Y8 & stock tranny; my clutch is really heavy to push down. As far as I know, it catches perfectly fine and I have no problems driving, but the clutch is quite heavy... pressing the clutch down is significantly firmer than my 98 Civic with a Y7 an stock tranny & a previous EL i owned. For instance, sometimes at a stop light, I'll keep the car in gear and the clutch in; it's so difficult to do that with this car because I'm basically stomping on the clutch pedal.

Could something be wrong with it? If so, what? Is this something I can adjust in the driveway?

You probably shouldn't keep your foot on the clutch at a stoplight because that wears the throwout bearing.

The clutch might have been replaced with an aftermarket clutch designed for a modified car with much more power. A clutch like that would have much stiffer springs that would require much more effort to operate.

^x2...my swap came with an ACT 6-puck clutch and it nearly lifted me out of my seat every time I pressed down on it. I swapped it for a more humane clutch and all is good now.

I agree. Probably has been replaced with an aftermarket clutch/pressure plate with stiffer springs.

My stage2 clutch is noticeably harder to push in than a stock clutch.

hmm, good point... i don't know if there's an aftermarket clutch in there... oh well... i won't be keeping that car too long anyway.

Interesting though, I didn't know that keeping the clutch pressed in at a light was bad for the tranny!

thanks guys!

why not? If I come to a light that's already red, it's going to turn, why pull it out of gear, right? at least now I know that doing that may, in the long run, cause wear to the tranny, but beforehand, it was more convenient to just keep it in.

Yeah, I did this too...too much work to move that gear lever. I stopped doing it after replacing my throw-out bearing.
