whats that smell??!? help
i have a 1993 civic hatch
heres the issue.
when i select the air comming from the outside ( not recirculating air)
i smell exhaust fumes
now i know that i recently replaced the entire exhaust system... theres no holes and theres no loud noises.
do i have to replace my cabin/air filter?!?
kinda stumped and like to know how to fix this.
thanks

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a cabin air filter on these cars. Beyond that...
The thing this would normally sound like to me is a leak in the exhaust. Have you verified for sure that there are no leaks? I know that when my manifold was cracked to pieces, I would sometimes get exhaust smell inside the car. If you are absolutely sure that there are no hole in your exhaust, then it has to be sucking it in somewhere else.... It draws from the cowl area. You might want to try searching around and making sure everything looks normal there.
Does it still smell like exhaust on recirculate?
The way I'm looking at it is there's either a problem with the exhaust system or the HVAC system. My bet is on a leak in the exhaust, but if that isn't the case, you need to check for holes in the HVAC or possibly in the body/around the windows. There has to be a hole somewhere.
Hope it helps you find it.
P.S. a good way to test for holes and the like in the HVAC system is by spraying perfume/other stinky stuff in various areas and seeing if it gets drawn inside the car. I've got a rusty exhaust full of holes so it's pointless for me, but you might try spraying compressed air up your exhaust pipe to check for leaks (really not sure if it's safe or not, so I'm not taking any responsibility if something gets f'd up in the process)
