The VIN is a number assigned to all US cars (from the 70s on they've used the same basic format). It's a 17 digit number. It usually appears on the dash (through the windshield), on the firewall and on the driver's door jamb (along with many other parts).
An example would be 2HGEM1251WH754036 (totally fake number - this means a 1998 Civic Si with a 4 speed auto or CVT built in Canada - LOL).

You'll notice "EK" being thrown around a lot.
EK is a general term (though technically wrong) meant to denote a 1996-2000 Honda Civic. Some might use it to refer in particular to 1996-2000 Civic hatches.
No true EKs were ever meant for sale in the United States.
Here is a brief run down of what they mean though. I'll include a commonly known trim and it's origin if there is one.
EJ6 - Coupe / Hatch / Sedan - 1.6L SOHC non-VTEC (USDM 96-00 CX/DX/LX/VP)
EJ7 - 1.6L SOHC VTEC-E 2 door (USDM 96-00 HX)
EJ8 - 1.6L SOHC VTEC 2/4 door (USDM 96-00 EX)
EJ9 - 1.4L SOHC non-VTEC 3/4 door
EK1 - 1.6L SOHC VTEC-E 3/4 door
EK2 - 1.3L SOHC non-VTEC? 3/3 door
EK3 - 1.5L SOHC VTEC 3/4 door
EK4 - 1.6L DOHC VTEC 3/4 door (JDM/EDM VTi/SiR)
EK5 - 1.6L SOHC ?? 4 door 4WD
EK6 - ??L SOHC ?? 3 door
EK7 - ??L SOHC ?? 3 door
EK8 - 1.6L SOHC ?? 4 door 4WD
EK9 - 1.6L DOHC VTEC 3 door (JDM 97-00 Civic Type R)
EM1 - 1.6L DOHC VTEC 2 door (USDM 99-00 Si)
EN1 - 1.6L SOHC VTEC CNG 4 door (USDM 98-00 GX)
Oh, and also:
JDM = Japanese Domestic Market
USDM = United States Domestic Market
EDM = European Domestic Market
And so on.
"X Domestic Market" means that car (or part) was originally built to be sold in "X" country (or continent). It has nothing to do with where the part was built or assembled.
For example, US '94-'01 Integras were built in Japan. They are still USDM though because they were meant for sale here. The same goes for US '96-'00 hatches. All USDM '96-'00 hatchbacks were built in Canada. They are still USDM though.
