Re: What's the best B-series transmission for a turbo? (PhatBoy5015)
ls best to some people because long gears LOTS of pos. boost, b16 short gears. i like the b16 but ls is prolly the best
I'm a fan of the ls... just because; if u put enough power to the wheels and have a stiff clutch the ls is nice.
again you can always crack em open and mix and match like ^^^ there
ls final gear is a must for driving fast on the highway thou

Wow... just read that whole load of crap, here it is.
For drag racing the b16 tranny is the fastest and the best, somebody mentioned this on page one. All the positive boost you get from the LS tranny= a **** load of heat... As in really high exhaust gas temperature, Honda blocks dont like high EGT's its causes catastrophic block failure(worst case).
The B16 tranny is easier for the engine to spin, its doesn't have to work as hard to propel the car... So it has lower EGT's.
The two arguements of 1)quicker acceleration and 2)prolonging engine life through lower EGT should be enough to sway your decision.
If it doesn't sway you then:1) you are a lost soul doomed to a slow car. 2)you should buy a PT cruiser and give up trying to win races... Unless the laws of physics and gravity don't effect you in which case let me know so I can win some money.
Oh and this information is from two cars one a boosted b16 with b16 tranny, the other a boosted GSR with GSR tranny. both with close to identical setups, GSR on the highend ran almost 100 deg. hotter at the end of the 1/4 mile. So just imagine how hot an LS tranny must make it.

this thread is still going?
to the OP - if you really think, for some shitbrained reason that longer gears are better, go for it. everyone here including myself have told you that shorter gearing = faster acceleration. period.
game, set, match.

THE ls tranny is much better for turbo and you also have to realise the b16 tranny is only made for a 1.6 it wont hold lots amount of power. i have a b16 tranny on my b20 and the gears are really short by the time u just get to full boost u have to shift. ls tranny all the way.

We had the LS tranny in the first Del Sol turbo we did. Only boosting 7psi on stock internals but with tubular manifold and about a 30" FMIC, ext wastegate. Anyway, he ran about a 13.9 w/ 2.7 60' at like 108 or 109 mph and in THIRD gear!
Shifting twice > shifting 3 or 4 times.

I always said I would never join this board but....
I also find it ironic that the guy with 10-20 posts says ls and the guy with 6,000+ posts has an informative opinion with a lot of research. Sounds like you have made up your mind on the tranny you want already.
I am going to have to agree with everyone else on the shorter gears are better. In a perfect drag race with perfect traction higher (numerically) gearing is going to go from point A to B quicker. Shorter gears go from point A to B quicke but will reach top speed quicker. The opposite is true for taller gears. They will get from point A to B slower but have a much higher top speed. This is the basic theory of mechanical advantage. I know I am a mechanical engineering student. We have our own formula SAE team.
All this adds up to be if you are making any decent power you are going to spin through first and second.
If you want a simple answer go with the gsr its a universal all around answer. But for your application (interstate racing/daily driving) is
1-2 GSR
2-3 Si
5th GSR because I think you are stupid if you need to go any faster than that, but you can get better gas mileage with the ls 5th. I would probably go with the ls and try to stay out of it while racing.
Advice from experience is your friend.

Iv just read all three pages and people keep complaining how b16 tranny with boost = traction problems, there are ways to actually counter this i.e. LSD, better tyres etc

Re: (nofive-0)
The next step for this thread would be to discuss whether or not the gearing for the B 16/GSR/LS are as interchangeable as what people seem to be promoting. I ask this becasue I have a B16 tranny and have looked into swapping the LS 5th. The information I have found for this leads to a definate yes, however (from what I understand) the LS 5th that can be used comes from a specific year or generation. The truth to that I do not know.
The real question I propose is... how interchangeable are the Bseries trannys, and in what ways?

Re: What's the best B-series transmission for a turbo?
Honda's would be the first thing I'd see that liked low gears with a turbo I know my buddy went from a 4.56 to a 3.23 when he turbod his mustang and shaved .6 off his et with the higher gears

Re: What's the best B-series transmission for a turbo?
Laughable question as any tranny can be used with a turbo setup, going shorter gear doesn't always mean its best.
YEAH FOLKS I KNOW ITS AN OLD THREAD.

Would be great to have this thread closed. If anyone comes across this in the future know that whatever induction you use on a car is irrelevant to what transmission you should be using, it depends entirely on power output and intended track/street purposes...
