What's the best B-series transmission for a turbo?

What's the best B-series transmission for a turbo?
I am planning on doing a B18B turbo swap in my 97 Civic HX. I have always heard that a wider transmission (ls) is better for turbo cars because they stay in full boost longer. But I have heard a lot of people say that tighter transmissions (b16, ITR) are better for both NA and turbo cars. But this doesn't make any sense to me. Because about the time the turbo gets spooled up, it is time to shift. Is there anyone who knows from experience or facts which is better for a turbo car? Because everyone has a different opinion. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I just don't wanna buy the wrong transmission and have to swap it out later. Thanks.

That sounds like a question I would like to know too, but you might want to check with the guys on the Forced Induction forum, they should have a more solid answer to your question.
The LS tranny sounds good to me though

lol, not this topic again. It has been hotly debated many times.
Sit on the fence and go with a GSR tranny

None are BETTER then another. Its all personal opinion. I love my GSR gearing for boost. Some people like really short gears on the B16. The tranny i say never to use for boost is the LS. That tranny is for fuel only. and before anyone says "but your in boost longer and thats better" thats the biggest load of crap ever. Just because your in boost longer doesnt mean your going faster, if anything your putting alot more stress on the motor.

Well i got another question. If a GSR motor redlines at 8100 rpm on stock compression, will it still be able to redline that high if the compression is dropped for boosting?

The wider your powerband, the shorter (higher numerically) your gears, for hondas at least. That's why VTEC engines have shorter gearing... VTEC extends the RPM range of useable torque.

It's a heck of alot easier to change tire size than to change transmission gearing. might want to consider that as well.

Well i have 205/40/17s now. Which transmission would be best for interstate races? Again, The LS sounds like a better choice here.

no, it doesnt. if you plan on running a small turbo, that would spool quickly you might not want a b16 tranny because of traction issues. ls gears are long as ****, and the gas mileage saved is really minimal. gsr tranny is right in the middle.
i have a usdm type r tranny (same gearing as b16) and i should be boosting pretty soon.

I'm running a B16 and it seems way too short for gearing. I'd say go GSR, or go LS. I like freeway killers anyways so that's just my opinion.

Thanks for all your help guys. Since most of you seem to prefer the GSR over the LS, it probably would be a good idea to go with the GSR.

i have the B16 tranny, and i will be switching to the gsr when i can. i really dont like it at the track at all, and in town its kind of a pain with boost. id try to get a jdm gsr w/lsd if you could

shorter gears aren't always good, there are ppl that run out of gear (not having enough gear) during boost, thats why ppl switch to gsr or LS, but yea b16 or type r are good for all motor

Re: (1sikhatch)
i had a b16 tranny on my b16 in my turbo hatch i was running about 11 psi and putting out about 260hp and 191 tq. I loved my b16 tranny, i mean ya... i did not get a lot of full power time, but when i went to teh track it was perfect. I would pass the finish line just as i was about to hit the rev limiter in 4th gear.

He said shorter gears were better for acceleration which is always true, assuming you can hook up the torque as it comes. Long gears are good only if you have to go a certain speed and, since this kid won't be trapping at 120+ mph, a B16 or Type-R transmission will net him the best results.

very good idea for those that like to cruise in 5th gear on the freeay at low rpms
