Default What is wrong here?

B16B swap done recently. I now get a noise that sounds like a loose heat-shield when I start the car up from a cold start. It does not happen after the car has warmed up. Is this something to be concerned about or not?

I know it's frustrating to try to diagnose problems based on a noise.

But you have to give us a little more info.

Do you have a heat shield? Did you tighten the exhaust bolts? More info would help too.

Do you have a cat? Hows your oil and oil pressure. But if it sounds like a heat shield, its probably a heat shield.

if you think its the heat shield why not take it off then start your car. your car ever been in an accident? could be your hood......take sum wd 40 and spray it down and other parts see it that helps.

I had the hood latch replaced this past August, and I don't think the car was ever in an accident.

I lubed it up a month ago, I used the kind of grease you put on door latch hinges... I am really sort of ****( giggitty) about maintenance on my car as I don't have money for costly repairs such as engine rebuilding or replacement, I tend to do oil changes on time and tune-ups when they are needed... etc...

i'm having this exact same problem right now too. i don't think it's coming from inside the motor, and i don't have a heatshield either. when it warms up though it's fine. sounds like metal rattling and it gets worse in the cold weather. still haven't been able to figure it out. in for any tips as well.

Lots of thing act funny when cold. How cold is cold where you live. I live where it is 30 degrees today, and the exhaust leaks until the motor warms up, no problems in the summer though. If having trouble locating, get the car on jack stands, get under the car and have some one do a series of rev patterns until problem located, but exersize extreme caution. Keep the e-brake on and the car in neutral.

When the car is cold, jack the front up and start tapping the exhaust manifold ect with a rubber mallet. You'll eventually find your rattle if it's a loose piece of metal. Also try pushing your clutch in (when the car is running) and see if it has any effect on the noise.

It also has started making a pinging rattling noise on acceleration primarily between 3000-3500 RPM. If I rev it in neutral or while coasting or at a stop light, it does not make the sound

My car made that noise around there, I think it was just the exhaust. At a certain frequency it just resonates....

Ever do a valve lash adjustment? I mean, after giving it a good shake down, maybe check it out.

scott, does this sound like spark knock? that is what mine sounds like if I were using low grade fuel, however, it does it with premium. Also the noise that i'm getting when i crank the car is that of a power steering pump but i do not have power steering...

could be piston chatter. when metal heats up it expands. could just be cold pistons chattering till they warm up. i have heard of some people having this problem just my 0.2 cents, could be wrong
