Default What motor oil do you think I should use?

Thing is I bought a used block from a shop. Noticed it had a pennzoil filter on it along with synthetic oil in it. i did the swap everything is great I used GTX 10-30 and reused my oil filter from the "start up"

( NOT THE pennzoil filter that was on the block when I got it)

Now should I have used synthetic oil? I am using a honda oil filter..

Fill me in on what you use.

this is something that is much debated and your are not going to get a difinitive answer.
Really its up to personal preference, and where you live.

For example, I live in FLA where it gets mad hot in the summer. I run 20W-50 in the summer and 10w-30 in the winter. I like mobil 1 oil personally.

This topic has been covered many times, here is my post above from a thread just a few days ago.

honda, royal purple, or mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30. I use mobil 1 5w30 on my Y8, i dont have to but want to. My roomate said he could tell a slight difference in using castrol full synthetic and mobil1 full synthetic. Mobil 1 was better for his gsr motor.

I use castrol gtx for conventional and mobil 1 for synthetic. Usually when I first buy a vehicle especially one that is used I run the castrol for a couple of oil changes and see if it leaks or uses any then I'll switch over to the mobil 1, as for the filter I always use purolator pure one pl14459. Bought my civic aug. 99 w/ 67,568 and used castrol 5w30 for approx. 15k and switched over to mobil 1 5w30 and it has just under 160k today with zero problems knock on wood.

thanks a lot

IMO I feel like your just wasting your money if your just gonna throw synthetic in and your rings are shot or you have any various leaks. When you buy a used vehicle it's just like buying a box of chocolates. I had a mitsi once and it went through a quart every time I went through a tank of gas needless to say it was pointless to run synthetic. Bobistheoilguy is a really good website to learn a lot of good information. The motor oils that I use are castrol gtx, mobil, and of course mobil 1. Amsoil is good oil too but it's more expensive and is not as widely available as the others because you can find them anywhere. For the oil filters I mostly have used purolator throughout the years either the regular ones or the pure one which is a micron filter. I have used mobil 1 filters but spending almost $10 for just one filter gets old real quick. Oh and as for when I change my oil I generally try to do it around every 3k-4k.

from as long as I've been around on here I've noticed that the debate goes between mobil 1 and amsoil. With the oils that I have listed in my posts you cannot go wrong with any of them. I don't use pennzoil/quakerstate because of the parafin wax they put in it. I've seen some threads on here that had pictures of where pennzoil gummed up inside the motor. For the weight of the oil you should use what honda reccommends which is going to be 5w30. For a turbo'd motor I would run something a little thicker for the turbo like 10w30 or 10w40, the thicker the oil is it will carriy the heat better and won't burn off near as easily. As for synthetics the temperature does not affect them near as much as a conventional oil which is really good in the wintertime if you live somewhere that it gets pretty cold. The synthetic will get up and flow better protecting your engine whereas if you had conventional it might be the consistency of molasses, but thats an extreme case if you had 20w50 in.
