Default Changing to synthetic oil

I am looking to change over to synth today and I am wondering if I have to do anything different. I never changed the oil on this engine (new) yet so I just need a lil info. How many quarts will it take and do I want any special filter for synth? Do I just drain it from the pain like normal and just add synth or do I gotta clean it out in some special way to prepare for new oil?

Drain it, dump in 4 quarts. Use whatever filter you want. Leave it in there for at least 5000 miles.

Whatcha puttin in?

what is your justification for switching to synthetic? I just started using HG (Honda Genuine) and now I couldn't be happier HG= Happy car

Just do a oil change like you would if it was regular oil. You do not need a special oil filter. They do sell synthetic oil filter, but you do not need them for running synthetic oil products.

I just figure on a turbo engine I would rather use synth since it sees some heavy ****. Also....will 10w30 be fine on synth? Or is there a better choice (d series turbo, stock bottom end)

Alright I wanna do this today....so I should just get my regular filter, and some mobile 1.....is 10w30 or 5w30 a better choice for a turbo d series?

I'd suggest the 5w-30, 10w30 is what I use on my Mustang, newer cars or higher revving motors need the thinner oil.

i would use the 1030 cus the turbo tears the oil apart. since ur doing it urselft i would suggesnt never going past 2500-3000 miles with out an oil change.

5w30. Syn is made not to break down, why would you use 10w30. Go with the 5w30 and change it every 3000 if you are worried about it. I use honda oil filters, but mobil 1 does have a oil filter "specially made" for syn. oil, buy it if you must.

use 10w/30, don't listen to all these dumbasses, turbo motors produce a lot of heat, and synthetic oil DOES break down, not too much slower than regular oil. So change ur oil every 3000, dont listen to dumbasses who say 5000 or more. If you have a turbo max 3000 miles, i change mine every 2000. yes synthetic should be a must on ur turbo motor if u want it to last a long time. Regular oils can't take the heat. i would only recommend 5w/30 if ur motor is low milage with perfect clearences, otherwise use 10w/30, i have a lot of miles on my motor, i use 20w/50.

You are the dumbass, the engine was not designed for 10w30.

No matter what the HP use whats listed on your oil cap.

finally a voice of reason. Then the guy says "look at what they put in bikes, it's almost gear oil". Yeah way to compare a 4 stroke car engine to a 2 stroke bike motor. What a moron. I am a state certified mechanic, and not some hilbily back yard mechanic(not that there's anything wrong with that), just becuase the car starts to get old doesn't mean you put 20-50 in it. That is so ignorant I don't know where to start.I guess the millions of dollars in research that honda did, they must have overlooked telling you to change the weight of oil the higher the miles, Oh and I better tell ford motor company also because we don't do that at our dealer either.

sythetic oil only gets better the longer it's in. it's been proven you dont really have to change it till 10,000. 8,000 is a good time to replace though. people who get synthetic and change it every 3,000 are just wasting there money.

its funny how that only in america, honda wants to to use a 5w-30 or 10w-30. in japan, honda sells 5w-40 motor oil. in germany, honda allows you to use many different viscosities at different ambient temperatures. they even allow the use of 20w-50. the b16a in germany does not allow the use of 5w-30 unless the temperature is below 0C.

remember that a 30wt. motor oil is only a 30wt. motor oil at 100C. for every increase in 20C a motor oil drops one grade. for instance a 5w-30 oil at 120C is actually a 20wt. an increase in temperature causes the viscosity of oil to decrease. cold motor oil is thick as hell so i cant see why a 40wt. oil will destroy your motor.

Up here in Canada I change oil every 6,000 km. lol... how many miles is that ?
simple tip -- buy oil with the broadest temp range. sumthing like 5w40 or 0w40. The thinnest oil possible is desired for startup but at operating temps you want thick oil. It only makes sense. I run 5w40 or 10w30 in summer and 0w20 in winter. Good ol' Canadian winters (-40C coldest day of 2004)

This page was copied from Honda Civic Service manual (1500+ pages) and I think it says it all:

So the conclusion is:

5w30 is the best oil for year-round usage...

And if you want to use 10w30 or 10w40 oil, be sure that the outside temperature does not go below -10 'C or 20 'F

And the best changing interval is 3750 miles (less is better), cos noone can say that his car is driven under NORMAL CONDITIONS...

What is normal???

12 miles non-stop driving at least, temperature above 30 'F (or 0'C), no stop'n'go traffic blablablabla... another words: HIGHWAY...

So I say 3000-3500 miles is the BEST interval to change your oil...

dude oldest topic in the world and everyone has thier own opinion. The reality is that a 10w30 or 5w30 in either synth or mineral based will work great. It really makes no difference as long as you chenge your oil. Synth will go about 5000 in between changes and 3000 for mineral. If you race alot change after every race. Thats about it. Castrol and Mobile 1 are my favs then there are the super expensive synths like Royal Purple or Torco if you have cash to burn. ok my .02

Never, Never sell your car. I already feel sorry for the person who buy's it. BTW include this info while selling it and it will sell twice as fast.

man you must be brave. i dont even like taking my car 3000 miles without changing my oil. i change mine atleast every 2500 with mobil1. at 10k miles or 8k miles on a consistent basis without changing your oil, i bet the inside of your motor is looking very ugly right about now.
