Few thing:

1) Learn to use the . key

2) Go spend some time in the forced induction forum. Probably going to be the best bang for your buck. Or use Nitrous.

first look on the head cover and see that it says VTEC on it. then see if the car runs rich then see if its auto or manny. then feel if the car runs sluggish or if the vtec kicks in at around 6500. believe me this stuff helps i have had 3 d16s in my car and all of them have run great...you just need to check out there forums...they help...A LOT!!!

sayin VTEC on the valve cover doesnt mean its has it.

Check for the vtec selonid. its around the top left of the the engine, next to the valve cover. Also check the block code. it should be next the the exhaust header on the left. Its an ingraved markin and should read D16Z6 or something along those lines.

OP should do a regular main/ tune up, oil change, plugs, wires, fliud levels, etc. CHECK BRAKES ALSO. always a good thing to look at.

Check rich or lean by pulling the plugs and lookin at the coloring of them. white is not good, nor is black. you want a median between them.

VTEC is hardly noticeible in stock form on a d-series motor. And it doesnt kick in at 6500. hell redline is at 7200 but the motor stops makin power at 6800. Vtec kicks in around 4500-5500 depending on oil pressure and humidity etc.

OP: do plenty of research before anything. Save yourself some money and when its time for performance, look at suspension and brake upgrades first. THen tires. cant stress that enough. No sence in haveing power if you cant put it to the ground. learn to drive on a slower motor and keep racing off the streets. I wish someone taught me this **** when i was 16.

Vtec hits at 5,500 on a stock P28. Period. Its not going to come on sooner like some people might want to think. Humidity isn't something the ECU reads, so it had no bearing on when Vtec hits...

"Oh ****, its raining outside. I'll be able to hit vtec at 2,200rpms today!"

LOL

vtec has set engagement points and engagement factors: rpm minimum, vss speed limit (cant hit vtec in neutral) and no vtec in reverse. Oil also plays a roll...

if you want vtec at a different time, you connect it to a toggle switch so you can turn it on whenever you want

you can also check to see where the spark plugs are located. If the spark plugs are closer to the radiator then it's most likely vtec. If it's closer to the firewall of the car then it's not.

Which would be the most retarded and ricer thing one could do. This is usually only practiced by those who don't understand cam profiles/flow and just do things to be "cool".

exactly why i put the after the comment...

my brother and I were laughing about this the other day

vtec changes what lobe is used at a different points therefore using a switch will be pointless for power unless you switch it at the exact engagement point each time and each gear.. lol
