FML...blown d16z6 motor :(
Hey everybody, I just blew the d16z6 I have in my EG civic. Now I'm in the market for a new motor and I don't have alot of money to throw around. I am sticking with a D16Z6 or another D-Series. If your going to post something other than info/help with my questions regarding the D-Series you dont have to waste your time, please. I'm looking at some new D motors and I came across a JDM DOHC ZC thats in my $500-$800 price range. I just know nothing about these motors, I know its not v-tec but it is DOHC which is a plus. My main question is, which would be better for me to swap in right now to replace the blown one. Keeping in mind limited budget, doing the work myself, time restrictions, and going the N/A performance route to start. Thanks alot guys/girls, any info/help/comments are appreciated ~Joe

Well taking into consideration everything you said about money, time and what not a direct same engine swap would probably be the easiest! So go with a D16Z6 motor. ( Going N/A with a single came though, it def wont be fast at all, pretty much need to boost the motor to get anything outta it ).

Yeah bro, Z6 pwns ZC... I found a complete Z6 swap with tranny, axles, shift linkage, for $400 so I'm sure you could do the same... I also got a master gasket set off ebay and replaced all gaskets, seals, etc.. And my whips been running great for about 2 years now...

get another z6.
but don't go NA. you'll be throwing money away. if nothing else just use it for mpg.
otherwise you'd have to save up for a b series at least for NA.

*WARNING/ LONG POST* Not sure what actually broke in the motor. It never burned oil, no oil stains in my garage, and my coolant is clear as day, not milk-shakey. But when I drove it to the doctor, on the highway, everything was ok then all of a sudden loss of power, motor shut off, all the idiot lights went on. So i pulled over and the first thing i checked was the dipstick, and she was COMPLELETY dry. I was f**kin shocked. So I creeped down the shoulder to a gas station filled her up with oil and made it to the doctor with a wicked knocking/grinding noise coming from the bottom end. Finally on the way home down the highway(in the right lane with the hazards going 40) I heard a serious knock and then pinging like something finally let go down there (possibly oil pump?) pulled over and oil was flowing out from the underneath the car. SOOOOO, I'm guna drop the oil pan today (5/26) and investigate the bottom end, then pull the head off and check out the top end. I'm not going to try and fix anything I'm swapping for sure. Going to stick with a d16z6 as recommended by everyone. I really appreciate everyone's posts/help/comments you made this decision alot easier. Thanks guys! ~joe

pretty the same thing happen to me, bought my 94 ex d16z6 from a friend cheap and while i was driving it #2 rod shot out the front of the block and it died but i had to move it so i kept my foot on the gas and crank the hell out of it and it started and i drove it back to my shop which wasn't far, i was surprised it started with a broken rod. i swap the head and block out and only paid like 50 dollars in part but i already had a block and head laying around. Cheapest way is to swap in another z6

Hey Joe,
Sorry about the engine. If I were you, I'd look into the 3-stage VTEC D15B:
http://causeforalarm.thecarthing.com...TEC/index.html
Why? It should be a relatively painless swap (provided you find the right ECU), it's pretty cheap, it gives great mileage yet pushes a good amount of power when you floor it. Plus, it's a pretty unique engine.
Good luck,
-Walter

i'm doing it myself, but stoner95 if you wanted to fix it yourself youd be getting into the thousand dollar range depending on what was wrong and where you bought your parts junkyard/new from dealer and how much was actually damaged. You could just need new crank bearings or you couldve messed up the whole block like crank journals could be out of round and so on. Running low on oil is one of the worst things for your motor so unless you can pull your block apart and find everything thats wrong your better off finding the same motor you got in your car and swapping.

Spun a rod bearing and shot a rod through the block or the oil pan (or both) Your best bet would be to pickup a JDM OBD1 SOHC Vtec ZC (nearly identical to the D16Z6, reuse your intake and O2 sensor and you'd never know the difference other than the block stamp.
