Default What caused Snapped Axle

Hi Everyone,

I replaced passenger axle this weekend which wasn't too bad following instructions here, but had a tough time removing the ball joint from the LCA.

Just wanted to see what could have caused the axle to snap in half like this. Trying to narrow down and fix/replace what could have damaged the axle since I replaced it with a new and not reman part.

I bought the car about a week ago and it had no issues driving. No hard driving. Fully stock and unmolested EK for a daily.

Looks like the axle wore down or something rubbed the axle thin in the area...?

Looking at your pictures I see the remains of the rubber damper in the middle of the axle right by the breaking point.

It looks to me like it was trapping salty water and accelerating the corrosion process of the axle.

The rust is so bad you can see the axle is much thinner right there and it's where it broke.

Simply, normal long term corrosion broke it. Nothing I would be concerned about. It's nothing wrong with he car that caused that. Just age and salty road winters and a lot of years passing.

From the looks of it, it seems the P/O replaced the boot on that axle but should have replaced the entire unit. That's like buying new shoelaces for a pair of old *** worn-down shoes. Axles aren't that expensive and can be had for around $60. Replacing an axle is so much easier and less time-consuming than trying to repair it. Time > cost

hahaha yes! lots of rust! Ohio roads and their SALT!

Not too concerned yet since its just a DD/car to play with when bored. Have 2 other cars besides this Civic. I may use rust converter and paint under there when it gets warmer out.

I didnt even pay attention to that! Im going to replace the other side when the weather gets a little better and replace the Hood Release cable with a new one since my lever is missing inside the car.
