I would think that you need to use the correct ECU for whatever motor you have. If you have a SOHC VTEC motor in a 96 hatch I would assume it's a D16y8. You need the corresponding ECM. I don't know what the code for it is.

P2P for a D16Y8.
LS-VTEC will need a different ECU, preferably one that matches the cylinder head you plan to use. LS-VTEC building and tuning is a bit more complicated than just that though.

D16Y7 is P2E.
He said he has a SOHC VTEC, so we assumed D16Y8.

he said its a dx with a SOHC vtec motor in it. i would think you will need the P2P ecu since i would also think that you would have a d16y8

not sure what emmisions testing is like in your state but with stardard obd2 tesing (readiness test) if you put the p2p in your car you will not pass. you will get a cel for the evap system. ive got a mini-me in a 96 coupe using the p2p and there are actually several other issues as well. plain and simple to pass emisions leave your p2e inplace, afterwards go for the p2p. apin in the *** to do correctly!

he has a y8 though, not a y7. he would need the correct ecu for the engine to pass emissions, and they y8 uses a P2P ecu.

I understand he has a y8 and not a y7. what im saying is that if his car is a dx and he puts the y8 ecu in it will thow a cel = no pass. the y7 ecu will run his y8, tho with no vtec and pass. then like i said before after passing he can put the p2p in. if you still have the y7 youll want to put the injectors off it on the y8 (180cc vs 235cc) as youll be way rich with the y7 ecu and y8 injectors. im not trying to contradict anyone im telling you from personel experience.

Your gas tank should have nothing to do with it. What codes is your car throwing??For emmisions purposes you are running the right ecu and motor for a 96 so you should be fine.

no...switch to an OBD2a GSR ECU from a 96-98 integra OR do an OBD2-OBD1 conversion and run a chipped P28

Since your area has required emissions testing, I would suggest that you trade the P28 to someone for an OBD-2 ECU to run your LS-VTEC. It is impossible to pass emissions with an OBD-1 ECU in an OBD-2 car.
