They don't do anything by themselves.

Upgraded valve springs allow for higher RPM use without risk of floating the valves - thus you can safely run cams designed to make power at engine speeds beyond what your stock valvetrain was originally designed to handle.

I spose if you didn't have them your valves wouldn't close.

u need the stock ones..they're neccessary, but putting in harder ones allows u to wind ur car out more (run the engine faster) -- usually used in conjunction with rods, bearings, maybe a better crank, whatever u wanna do when u build up the foundation of ur motor when u intend to run a lot of horsepower on it
