I have a 1999 Civic ex 1.6 v-tec a/t trans. I'm trying to buy a used engine but im running into description that say vin7 6th digit or vin6 6th digit. How do i know the right engine for my car?

You should buy a D16Y8 engine. You can use one from either an automatic or a manual EX. The main part of the engine is exactly the same for either but some of the parts bolted to the outside are different. You would just reuse the ones from your car.

If someone wants to know the VIN number just get it from the plate on your car.

VIN beginning with... 1HGEJ6... the sixth digit is a "6" denoting a D16Y7 non-VTEC engine, 1HGEJ7... is a D16Y5 VTEC-E (HX trim)
1HGEJ8... is a D16Y8 VTEC engine for the EX trim, which should match your car.

easy place to find the VIN is the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side (from outside).
