Default trouble installing my momo wheel

I have my momo wheel installed on my civic, but I cannot get it on far enough so that it hits the plastic prongs that make the blinker's turn off automatically. I greased up the hub adapter kit and the steering column (where tht teeth are for the wheel), and slipped it on. I even put a 2x4 in front of the hub adapter kit and pounded it as hard as I could with a hammer... slightly bent the hub kit, but did not move it much closer to where it needs to sit. (The hub kit bent back when I installed the wheel again) Any suggestions as to how I can put the hub kit on farther without ruining it?
