Default Transmission overhaul: what fluids to use?

I will be replacing my clutch this weekend and I'm also swapping out my tranny for one that has lower miles and (hopefully) less wear. Now, I've already drained it out for the most part and I've stuffed all the holes with paper towels (axles inputs, reverse switch, etc).

I'll have to put new tranny fluid in it, but I'm wondering what you guys would recommend. My brother said to get GM SyncroMesh fluid, but idk if I can get that at a parts store or from the dealership only. I'll probably go ahead and flush my clutch fluid out as well since its been god knows how long since it's been changed, but for that I just use DOT3 (or is it DOT4) brake fluid, correct?

Also, what kind of grease should I be using in between the transmission and the engine? For things like the clutch fork, throwout bearing, etc? What kind of grease should I use, and where should it be applied?

Use Honda Manual transmission fluid as well as Honda DOT3 brake fluid. May be a bit more than Oriellys brand but it is better in my opinion and its what i use at work everyday. For the lubrication of transmission components use High temp wheel bearing grease as explained in this video pretty well. It well tell you were.

Hope this helps.

Great information. That video is actually made by the same company that made my clutch kit that I will be installing this weekend. Since all the dealerships in my area are closed I wont be able to use oem transmission fluid. What can I get at a parts store as a substitute? Brake fluid I'm not worried about, I'll just get some good name brand DOT3 fluid.

It's not. Honda takes pretty thin fluid compared to a lot of other vehicles. There's no standard like there is for ATF. Honda's take 10W30 or an even thinner MTF depending on the year. Toyota's take 75W90 gear oil most of the time and some Fords actually take ATF, there really isn't a generic MTF that works in everything. What year transmission? If it's a '92 - '95 put cheap 10W30 in it (No synthetic!) if it's a '96 - '00 put 10W30 in it for the weekend and then drain and refill with Honda MTF.

You can use Pennzoil Synchromesh with no ill effects and you can pick it up at Auto Zone, it's the same as the regular GM stuff not the friction modified version. I've ran it in my 97 for at least 60k miles no problems but I am now using the newer version of the Honda MTF. I didn't like the original MTF as it left me with a poorly notchy shifting transmission especially in the winter time so I switched to the synchromesh.

I would just get the Pennzoil and run it till it needs to be changed again and then you can either get the same stuff or you can try out the new formula of the Honda MTF. To me you are wasting money by putting in 10w30 just to get you by until you can get the correct fluid to put in, makes no sense to be changing it twice.
