Default Tranny problem, please help

i just bought a 97 civic coupe, base model. everything is fine except when you shift into second it wants to pop back out of gear. the only way it stays is if you shift it hard and hold it until you hit the gas.

any idead on what it would be? the car has a short throw shifter on it, i looked it over underneath the car where the shifter is and everything seems ok. my guess is something inside the tranny just don't know what.

i found a tranny with 105,000 miles on it but its from a 92-95, will that fit on the 97?

thanks guys

'92 - '95 tranny will work fine. all '92 - '00 D series trannys are interchangeable. If i were you i'd take a look at the linkage first though, its always possible that it got bent or started to rust through causing to not go into gear all the way and pop out. In terms or repair or replace there are probably other people on honda-tech who have a much better idea than i would, D series trannys are cheap though.

The tranny can use plain old motor oil. About 2.5 quarts is all, and that's not that expensive. You can find it for under $1/qt once in a while still. It's not much worse than changing your oil, so it won't hurt. If it works, I'd put better stuff in though.

I want to know the answer to the question of whether it's cheaper to rebuild a tranny or buy a working used one. D series stuff is cheap, but it can't all be disposable.
