Timing question??
I decided to check the timing on my 1992 civic vx. The middle red mark which is 16 degrees TDC is no where near the mark on the timing cover, it's more towards the front of the car. I adjusted the distributer forward and it gets closer, so i adjusted it again, and again till i cant go any further and the 16 degrees TDC mark still wont get any closer to the the timing cover mark. I have no idea what to do. Any help will be appreciated.
Sorry if you dont understand, I explained the best i could. Thanks in advance.

set the engine to TDC on cylinder #1. the crankshaft pulley should have a white mark on it (not the 3 red marks that are together). it should line up with timing belt plastic cover pointer and also the camshaft pulley should have the "UP" symbol facing upward with both lines perfectlly aligned with the block. that applies to the VX engines. the EX engine requires you to have the lower line (the one that points to 7 o'clock) aligned to a pointer that is on the timing cover.
if they are not perfectlly aligned you need to get them align.

once you get the camshaft and crankshaft pulley properly aligned and you have the engine warmed up to the normal level( fan goes on twice, jumped the 2 wire connector) you can finally do a proper timing adjustment. if it is aligned properly you shouldn't have any problems since the white mark will line up with the pointer when the engine is at idle. then once you advance it to 16 degrees TDC, it should line up with the middle red mark. that is 16 degree TDC. if it is off then play with the distributor a little bit and it should line up perfectlly.

no, you can use 18 gauge speaker wires. just make sure it's small enough to fit in the connector.
