Default ignition timing + adjustment question

.I have a z6, isnt the base timing 16 degrees btc or what? I dont know if its my old timing gun, or my inability to use, probably both but, when the gun flashes does is that what brings up the reference lines and pointer or what, and will this be affected by not having the t-belt cover on? helps always helpfull

Base timing should be 16 degrees BTDC which is checked using the markings on the lower timing cover and the crank pulley. I'm not sure I understand your question, because you have no pointers without a lower timing cover.

One last bump on this as well, thanks "ddd4114" you answered a question i had lingering about if the cover not being on affects the process. But can someone say specifically what the flash light shows, so ill know what to look for, i used a how-to from c-speedracing.com but out of the lines and such what exactly is the timing gun showing on the cranks, a pointer, line, or what?

on the lower timing belt cover.... there is a plastic point that sticks out like this :> and below that there is a plastic v that sticks out like this <

looking down the side of the engine.. line them up like gunsights....
then it should light up the mark.

As for the marks on the pulley... there are 4. three together and one alone.

If your timing light is not adjustable (as in adjusting the degrees of advance)
You should line up the three...The middle is your 16btdc mark and the two red lines on either side are your spec which is + or - two degrees.

The one alone is your TDC mark and should be white.

If you have an adjustable one you can check both marks. For the three lines set the light to 0. For the TDC mark you set the light to 16 degrees and you will see the TDC mark.

As for no T belt cover you can only estimate it as said before.

You know I have never been able to match the white with the red lines

Yup, the markings on the crank pulley go "18-16-14-----------------------0" BTDC (although there will obviously not be numbers on the pulley).

Place the inductive pickup on the spark plug wire for cylinder #1, and look down the gun sight (as stated). Whenever the light flashes, you will see something like this:

----|-|-|----------------------------------|--------------------------

The middle in the group of three is 16 degrees BTDC.

Thanks everyone now im getting somewhere, when this shows up when flashing, then do you go by the pointer on the t-belt cover and just match it to these timing marks to get where you want?

First off do you have an adjustable light?

Yes, the three marks should line up with the pointer on the Tbelt cover with a non-adjustable light. Try to get it set to the middle one of the three.

Prob wouldnt be a good idea to over-advance the timing either... Too far advanced can cause detonation, an engines #1 killer, next to oil starvation anyway...

Yours will work fine. You don't need an adjustable light for this.
