Default Timing Belt Change

yea i already did a search but only came up with a bunch of stuff with pple complaining about getting the crankshaft bolt off or something

so i'm thinkin about getting my timing belt changed next weekend, and i really prefer working on my own car rather than have someone else have the pleasure of doing so AND paying them for it.... so how hard or easy will this be?

i have a 94 del sol si (d16z6). what tools/equipment will i need and how long should this take? and are there any complication i should be prepared or look out for? thanks

it's not all that hard...it really helps to have air tools for the crank pulley bolt though

check it out. I just did my timing belt 1 week ago on my 94 ex (d16z6). should take about 2 hours total to do the whole project, taking everything off and putting it back together. Take one word of advise though, don't screw around with that crankshaft pulley bolt by using a screwdriver jammed into the flywheel to keep the pulley still. The ONLY way to get it off is an air gun, or the moroso crankshaft pulley remover that I bought through summit racing for $70. All else fails. You also want to get a couple of extensions with a jackstand to hold them up and a breaker bar attached for more torque. use the extensions to extend it out past the wheel well so you can get a full range of motion. Let me know if you need more help.

Well, since your in there, you should also look into replacing the water pump and the tensioner set. And since you would be replacing the water pump, now is also a good time to do a coolant flush, belts and hoses. This was just what I did on my stock 99 Civic CX hatch (D16Y7).

What to watch out for: Obviously the crank pulley bolt (I used a Moroso-like tool for the job), and I replaced mine for good measure, especially after hearing all the sh*t I was gonna have to put this bolt through (smacking it, heating it, etc..). And since the valve cover had to come off to get the upper timing belt cover off, I went ahead and did a valve job and replaced the valve cover gasket (which implies you need some Honda Bond). Lets see, you also have to loosen the upper drivers side mount to get the old belt off/ new belt on...which was a little stuck on there, but PB Blaster took care of that. Aside from this stuff....the Helms was essential to do this job correctly.

did u use nething to help support the engine while loosening the driver side mount? or u just left it hanging? i have an extra jack so i was thinking of using that to help support the engine and not put as much stress on the other mounts. Also, will having my bumper off help give me more room or space to work with? cuz i hafta take it off and replace my horn anyway. thanks
