Default timing belt?...

I'm kind of new to motor fix-ups on hondas, (usually v-8"), so here goes, does a civic have a timing belt and if it does, how do you check it and when should I be looking for a new one (mileage)?

yes...check the tension and make sure that the belt isnt frayed whatsoever...honda recommends you change them every 90,000...but its good to change them every 60,000

make sure you do this as "preventive maintaince" and not a repair job because a broken timing belt usually destroys motors.

welcome to the honda club

not to sound like a TOTAL jackass, but would it be wise to get a chilton's book for my car, cause I'm really big on saving cash if I can do it myself...

Yes, get a Chilton's/Hayne's whatever at the least. If you're really serious, get the bible.
