your engine has to be up to operating temp and if you t-stat is sticking open it will not allow it to heat up

this is correct, you must be at normal running temperature before you can hit vtec. unless you've rewritten your ecu to not check coolant temperature sensor first before engaging vtec. in theory, you shouldnt really be revving that high anyhow until your engine is warmed up.

This is all good info. You should be able to tell by your temp gauge if your car is up to normal operating temp. Just before I replaced my t-stat, the needle was just above the first mark at the bottom, instead of at the middle. Hence, vtec would not engage. Once the t-stat was replaced, the problem was solved. It should be pretty easy to do also. If you want, since you are new to Honda's, I would suggest getting a Haynes or Chilton's manual. It can work wonders for you. If not, just ask us! Good luck.
