Default thermostat direction

Hey HT so I have a question, I know it may seem dumb but was just wondering. When you replace the thermostat on a 95 civic with d16z6 will the thermostat only go in one direction or is it possible to put it in backwards? If you can put it in either way what would happen if installed wrong? I am asking because I replaced mine on Friday and got in a hurry because it started to pour down rain. It does not over heat but it seems like the heater does not blow as hot as it did before the replacement. Any ideas?

You install it with the pointy part facing out. Best way I can describe haha just google it and you'll see what I'm talking about. I've heard of people putting it in backwards but if you think about the mechanics of it, your car would then overheat. This is because the element that expands to allow coolant to flow through would never get hot enough to open. Therefore, never allowing the coolant to flow back to the radiator.

OK thank you I'm almost 100 percent sure that's how I put it in. Just wanted to know because not my heater is not nearly as hot as it was before

Sounds like you need to bleed the system of air again. Heat won't return to normal is there is still air in the system. I have the funnel to do this but take the radiator cap off and let the car run to operating temp, filling accordingly. Squeeze the lower radiator hose slightly, watch for bubbling coolant, but that will help relieve some air. Inside, set the heat to high and keep the fans turned OFF. Keep topping off until all air is relieved and coolant levels off. Fill reservoir tank to appropriate level afterwards. That should solve your problem.

Also of note for any future searchers, the thermostat can not be installed in the reverse flow position. It could potentially be installed twisted clockwise/counterclockwise updside down or out of position only. The bulk of the thermostat won't fit into the front housing allowing a reverse flow install.

If the thermostat is out of position (clockwise or counter clockwise movement of thermostat), I believe it tends to leak. It should open and flow the coolant through.

The Lisle funnels work pretty good. Definitely worth it.
