was the cluster ever taken out?
if so, some screws might be loose
it happened to my buddy's temp gauge (working & not working)

yup. easiest thing is to take the distributor off, remove the cap and rotor, then unscrew the plate holding it down, remove the wires, then put the new one in and reverse the steps. good luck; just did it to mine so i know.
