SO i hear alot of people saying you can use Syncromesh in your transmission to band-aid small grinds, then other people say, "NO, syncromesh is for gm cars, not hondas, dont use it at all; use honda mtf!" Some people say a combination of the two fluids.... who is right???

I don't know man. I used it and the first few months it feels fine, but then my gears started feeling all crunchy and stiff. I'd have problems getting into first gear.

I switched it out to just regular Castrol GTX 10w-30 and it feels much better now.

I know some people's trannys have lived off it and were fine, but I don't trust it anymore. Even the bottle says not meant for other transmissions...

Really? IDK, I've used since I bought my Honda, and it's not God's gift to cars or anything, but it works. Does 10w-30 really work?

lol I really like it a lot more than synchromesh (Pennzoil anyway). I used it for a long time, then put it in again recently. Then just got really skeptical and drained it out (only used the new batch for around 100 miles) and put in Castrol gtx 10W-30 and it felt so much better. Plus its cheaper so you can change it out more frequently

I'd always have to run my gears into 2nd to get into first before. Now it slides in no problem. Really weird

10w-30 is what the manual says your supposed to use.... But i wanting a band-aid fix for a while, and i cant find any difinitive answers

synchromesh will clear up most slight grinds, but it won't do anything for harsh grinds other than quiet it down a bit.

I've used it for the last 500 miles or so, and for the first half of it it seemed to be doing a very good job and cleared up the slight grind I had in 3rd, but now it's slowly creeping back and shifting isn't as smooth as it was when I first filled it up with synchromesh. And I've ruled out the possibility of leaks.

Basically the same as what happened to me so I swapped it out.

Yeah, its so slight i might not even call it a grind: just a squeak as it goes from 3rd to 4th gear (91 integra ls) but it feels grindey through the stick. What should i put in there?????????

I could prolly put syncromesh in, and it would go away, but will it screw up more things in the long run? Maybe honda mtf would fix it? Maybe put in synchromesh, and sell the car before it gets messed up lol?

I guess you can put the synchromesh in but only for like 500miles? Then just put in GTX 10w-30 or Honda MTF.

Or just go straight to Honda MTF and see if it helps out at all since it doesn't sound like a major problem.

Im using amsoil syncromesh and I like it. Coverd up my grinds.

For older models Honda recommended putting 10w30 in the transmission.

For newer Hondas, made after they finally released an MTF fluid (early- or mid-90s?), they recommend using their MTF - 10w30 is only recommended as a band-aid stop-gap, and should be drained ASAP. At least that's what they say - I know someone who ran 10w30 in his 96 without any headaches for tens of thousands of miles.

Personally I put aftermarket MTF in my trans after the last clutch change, and that fluid caused a steadily worse progression of grinds - at first everything was fine, then 1st & 2nd started grinding, then 3rd started grinding, but when 5th started grinding I'd had enough. I drained the aftermarket and put Honda MTF in there. Grinds slowly got better over 5000 miles or so. Drained the fluid again, more Honda MTF. Another 3000 miles or so and the grinds completely went away. Little harder to get into 1st now but at least I don't have a fight on my hands with every shift.

Never discount that crusty fluid or material suspended in the old fluid could be the source of your grinds. Sometimes doing 2 changes at brief intervals can flush out enough of whatever's causing the problem.

Reason Honda switch to MTF is the oil 10w30 called for SF/SG spec, newer oil is missing the needed additives, like zinc.

Yeah its definintely a grind. but i can make it not grind by double-clutching, so im sure its the syncros.
