Default steering by its self...

my sisters civic seems to be steering by its self. The problem is intermitent, but the wheels will turn all the way to one side with just the smallest input to the steering wheel (while parked). When this happens the steering wheel spins wildly to one side. while driving it she describes a pull on the steering wheel, but she is able to hold the wheel and keep it straight. Seems to me like the power steering is confussed and giving full assist when its not needed. Unfortunatly I don't know much about this cars ps system. anyone else experience this? what should I check?

92 civic, 1.5, 5speed

if the steering wheel turns smooth with no rough spots the p/s should b ok. i would check ur alignment and even somtimes breaks can do that. a stuck break pad could cause unwanted breaking and can cause the car to pull to one side. if her breaks have no wear wat so ever the suspension is in need for a check [alignment] tire balance, tie rods, control arms etc. if the alignment checks through then check the the steering. i think 92 civc have a rack and pinion setup but im not sure. . .
best of luck hope this helps

yeah but would any of that cause the wheels to whip to one side while the car was not in motion? Due to that fact that it can happen while the car is not in motion, I would say that rules out anything to do with the brakes and suspension. Is there a sensor or valve or something that would trigger the ps to send assist when it shouldn't?

I was thinking the exact same thing.
