Starter bad Solenoid?

Starter bad Solenoid?
Hey,
I'm following a guide on bench testing the starter motor (clicks but won't start/turn over on the car)
I hook up the starter with a jumper cable to a good battery and bridge the positive to the the little ignition connector.
The pinion/gear moves in/out but does not spin.
If I manually go straight from the + battery directly to the motor terminal it spins fine, so I know the motor works itself.
If I manually go straight from the + battery directy to the little ignition connector it moves in and out fine.
They just won't work together when hooking up normally - is this the solenoid or bad connection somewhere?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Starter bad Solenoid?
That is how they usually fail. If you take the sheet-metal cover off the back of the solenoid you will see there is a copper disk on the end of the solenoid plunger, which comes down to to bridge two copper contacts on either side, connecting the battery terminal to the motor.
The side contacts wear out, developing a groove where the disk is supposed to touch them, until contact is no longer made and the starter clicks but won't turn. There are people selling new contacts online.
