Default SRS LIGHT! GOING ON AND OFF !

Hey guys ,

i have a 1996 ek1 honda civic GLi

and my SRS light keeps going on and off.

usually when i turn my car on it goes on and then after about 5minutes of driving it goes off, and then during the trip it will go on and off every now and then.

i dont know what is the problem
im assuming it may be :
a loose connection?
a weak battery? (i also have a sound system it has to power)

or do i have to pay alot of money to fix this>???

ANY SOLUTIONS GUYS?

thanks alot!

if its OBD2 they can hook it up to a scanner and find out why its on. or so im told... if not maybe look up to see if there is a way to reset the SRS light on an EK.

i had a 95 coupe and the SRS light came on one day when my ignition coil burnt out on me... coincidence im sure but my stupid *** figured i would have to get bent over at honda to get it fixed so i just left it. really made me hate my car lol then i searched on here and found out how to reset it.

it was actually pretty simple. i felt like an idiot for not doing it back when it originally started. lol i would of felt alot safer in that thing lol.

A "CEL" is a "Check Engine Light".

"OBD2" refers to "On Board Diagnostics (Version 2)".

Unfortunately everything I have seen in the past points to at least European vehicles not having DTC (Data Link Connector) ports, which is what you would plug the scanner into in order to read the OBD2 codes.

I imagine many other countries are also still not using the OBD2 systems in their cars that the US vehicles have been required to have since 1996.

There is a LOT of information in the service manual about the SRS system. So I'm sorry I can't post it all up here. I'll post a little to start out though.

24-5
Self-diagnosis System

A self-diagnosis circuit is built into the SRS unit; when the ignition switch is turned ON (II), the SRS indicator light comes on and goes off after about six seconds if the system is operating normally.

If the light does not come on, or does not go off after six seconds, or if it comes on while driving, it indicated an abnormality in the system. The system must be inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

For better serviceability, the memory will store the cause of the malfunction, and the data link circuit passes on the information from the memory to the data link connector (DLC). This information can be read with the Honda PGM Tester connected to the DLC (16P).

The first thing you're supposed to do in order to diagnose an SRS system issue is read the DTC.

More info to start you out with here:

Tell me what your results are and I'll try to give more information along that path.

i didnt even think of this. makes alot of sense, do EK's have the SRS plug like my EG did where you can reset the computer for it. Obviously if the light comes back on after its been reset he would have to find the problem and fix it but maybe like in my case it was just something stupid and needed to be reset
