Default Squealing noise (not high pitched) from front of car when driving

There's a new sort of squealing noise (not high pitched though) coming from the front of my car when I drive.

Some details:

'98 Civic DX Hatch (stock motor & automatic tranny)
1. Gets louder as I go faster.
2. When I turn all the way left or right, it silences.
3. It didn't happen over time, just kinda appeared one day. (hasn't been long)

I've been told it's a wheel bearing but I want another opinion.

Thanks HT!

Another obvious question; Did you at least check? Or are you waiting to gather up a list of possibilities before you do?

Lol, see other thread. I got no tools where I live. Literally just a little socket set and small misc. tools unrelated to this problem or its solution.

Whirring/Squealing noises are usually signs bad bearings. Clicking is usually the sound of a bad CV joint when making a turn. jack the car up and spin the tire to see it makes noise while up in air (May or may not be there as some noises require car to be under load) Grip the tire at 3 and 9 o clock and shake it a bit to see if there is any play. None of these exercises require any specialty tools. However to replace the bearing (In my own experiance) one needs a good jack, a good socket set, a BFH to hammer out the bearings, a dremel to cut off the race left on the hub and someone to press them into the proper depth. Lastly an alignment is in order.

could be the dust shield behind the brake rotors. that is a pretty common cause of noise

X2.... start with inspecting the easy things first.

Another good test to do is lift the car up and see if the tire moves when you push on it at 12 - 6, and 9 - 3.
