my speedometer will completely stop working if I am doing between 40 and 55 mph. I can do any other speed and I am fine, but if I'm doing 45, it will stop working. I just have learned to live with it. If I look down and my speedo isn't working, than I know I'm doing 40-50.
As for your problem, check for a loose connection on the VSS connector. Black connector on top back of your tranny.

it's the part with a dotted box around it on the top right. If you have a manual tranny, it will be the only sensor on the top of the tranny. The reverse sensor is on the front lower part of the housing.

Had the same exact thing, I changed my harness and fixed the problem.
Mostly likely if a loose connection didnt fix it, the actually harness is corroded.
Go to your local junkyard or if you have a buddy that has a spare engine harness and cut the SSV harness.
Soldering it would be best, but if you dont have access to that, just color match the wires and use electrical tape.

At the VERY least, use solderless connectors. Electrical taping wires that are exposed to vibration and heat/moisture is just asking for a bad connection.

VSS is connected to engine harness. It's like $350 discount price from the dealer for an eg/dc. if its a vtec model car, you can find a used one for $100-200 asuming its an eg/dc or $150-300 for a vtec model EK.

you can go to a junkyard and cut the sensor off another car and solder it onto your harness. that's most likely not the problem. Just check to make sure your wires are going into the plug tightly.

Thats all connected to a gear inside your tranny. The gear spins at the same speed as the axles, and it sends the signal to the ecu. Theres nothing more to the "sensor" than what you see.

just so i dont have to start another thread i got a couple questions...
my vss just went out to, i tried cleanin it and everything but it is dead. volt meter said .02 and i read it was supposed to pulse at 5 and get to as much as 12.
anyways im ballin on a buget and want to know if a d series vss will fit on a b series. i have a b18c, i think i can get a d series one pretty easily and more importantly cheaper.

$350? I didnt tell the guy to buy an ENGINE harness, I told him to buy just the harness(clip).
That should be like $5 from a local race shop that has messed up harnesses laying around.

I dont know why you took it apart, its not a rebuild kind of thing.

Yes, just the harness that has 3 wires and clips into the VSS.
Its very easy to get water in there since its facing up, cleaning your engine for example, casuing corrosion.

also check the plug on your alternator. my speedo wouldn;t work, but everything else in the dash worked fine. make sure the green alternator plug is clean and pushed all the way on. also search under my name. i did a big write up on the 92-95 civic speedo. diagrams of the wires and everything.

Also try packing the plug with a little bit of Vasoline or dielectric grease.
That's if the plug and/or connector looks a bit corroded.
As far as the VSS goes, any 1992-1995 Civic, 1994-1998 Integra (maybe even newer) will all work the exact same.
I seriously doubt anyone here needs a new harness of any sort. The problem will be the sensor, the connection, or the fuse.

I am experiencing the same problem even after replacing the sensor itself. Thanks for all the help

well i had a very similar problem as your recently. mine would bounce around a little or get stuck sometimes or not even read anything. I don't know if its the same thing but i replaced the entire gauge cluster for other reasons (tach) and now i don't have any of the previous problems. i think that my speedometer must have been going bad somehow. anyways maybe try looking into a speedometer problem if your vss checks out to be all good.
