98 civic lx, 217k miles had acceleration issues for about two weeks where it would sputter like it wanted to stall out in first gear up to about 3,000 rpm when accelerating from stop or rolling stops. During the last 3 or 4 days the problem became worse and was sputtering like it was hitting a rev limiter while accelerating and revving in neutral or park. The car died out when coming up a hill and now won't start. I have loosened the fuel line before the fuel rail and it is getting fuel and also checked spark from the plug wires and getting good spark. Starting fluid would not get it to fire. The engine was running well other than the sputtering/hesitating at low speeds prior dying. Timing belt was changed at 100k miles and cap/plugs/wires were changed approximately 30k miles ago. Engine is turning well like it has good compression. ANY IDEAS?? Thanks for any help.

Check whether the timing belt slipped out of time.
