If it's actually clucking around IN the gas tank then looking underneath the car isn't going to help you. So ditto the question above.

Only thing I can think of is the filter sock or the level assembly but it wouldn't make any noise. Could someone have put something down the fuel neck as a joke?

The fuel pump could be flopping around - sometimes people don't put the rubber isolator back in. Does the 92 have an access hole for the tank under the rear seat like the later Civics? Next step is to open it up to take a look.

Have you tried having someone sit in the back while you drive so they could attempt to pinpoint the source of the noise?

Dropping the tank isn't hard btw. It's just a pain in the ***.
Run it as dry as possible before you attempt to drop it.
I really think it's unlikely there's something in the tank that's large enough to cause a knocking noise though.

Fuel tank pressure sensor codes are pretty common ("bad gas cap" is what they're often diagnosed as). They usually run fine.
Not all Hondas have a fuel tank pressure sensor though. I know a '97 Civic CX doesn't, for example.

It could run perfectly normal with the pump loose, there is a short section of flexible line connecting the pump to the tank hanger.
The fuel pump is accessable under the rear seat, remove the cover in the floorpan, then the lid on top of the tank. No need to drain the tank.
Looking in the tank will take less time than I took to write this reply. I just repaired a car that had a loose pump, someone left out the retaining washer on the bottom. Why don't you look in the tank so you can confirm or deny that this is the problem?
