Someone explain VTEC
I understand what it is. VTEC is variable valve timing. It is a third lobe on the camshaft that the engine switches over to.
But I see people selling a car and claiming "you can really feel the VTEC kick in". What do they mean by this?

You can feel when the crossover happens, its like a sudden boost of power so to say. You can feel it in the seat of your pants, and hear it.
I know with my Prelude, I can really feel it when vtec engages and the sound is just oh so wonderful.

Prelude? Maybe. Civic? Not so much. That's why we have so many "Help! Can't feel VTEC kick in." or "How do I make VTEC kick in harder?" threads.

Thats why I said "so to say" and not with the H22A4 in my prelude, it is noticeable pretty much everytime I hit the crossover. Bone stock too. My Civic, you pretty much only noticed it if you kept an eye the rpm gauge.

I never noticed a abrupt feeling of power, It was very linear in my GSR the way the Vtec crossed over. The car will definitely start to pull harder towards redline.
Usually tuning can adjust how well the crossover is into the Vtec cam. You don't want a harsh crossover that you can feel, the more linear the crossover can be, the better.

I know right? 99% of the time it's a 13-16 year old kid that knows VERY limited about honda's and just says it. I mean i'll admit when i was 10-11 i never knew exactly what "Vtec was" or "Did" but at least i took the time to learn and experience it. Most people that like honda's(Like i said MOST NOT ALL, not even really most but a good amount of people that like Honda's) Know minimal to nothing about them. Except that they have "Vtec".

Not really. Maybe with an intake but not really. And you describe it like it's some kind of Battlestar Galactica "turbo" boost button when it activates. Not really. Most of the time it's unnoticable.

Re: Someone explain VTEC
Fun fact, took my buddy's friend(Says he knows everything about honda's LAWL) out in my dad's 93 sedan(EG) D16y7 No-v. After we were done, he kept saying "Man vtec was kicking so hard" me and my friend grew 6 packs from laughing so hard. Always fun taking rookies out(Not saying i'm a veteran lol). I'm guessing the reason he kept saying that is when you cruise in 2nd then slam the pedal for a second and it jerks lol

In my race car when Vtec engages the sound decibels, go way up to ear piercing levels, and power is noticeable.
Think of it as a steady aggressive climb to the next shift.
Thank god for my in car communications ear buds, its damn loud.
With out them id be deaf after a 20 min session.
Im reving to 8500 each shift.
Yes the car is built and tuned for track use only.

Re: Someone explain VTEC
my vtec transition is also a smooth steady climb. barely a change in exhaust tone, no sudden kick in the pants feeling but you definitely feel yourself being pushed back into the seat.
after the tune i had to look at the calibration to know where it was at.
