Default Some helpful advice to those who plan to replace their timing belt

(92 Civic CX)

And it was a complete success! For anyone who's going to try it, an impact wrench will work wonders on the crankshaft pulley bolt. We tried a breaker bar at first, but it wouldn't budge.

As well, make sure you set cylinder 1 to TDC before you tear the old timing belt off. You can tell you're at TDC when you line up the crank/cam pulley marks and the rotor is pointing to spark plug terminal #1. When we first lined up the marks the rotor was 180 degrees off from terminal #1, so one full rotation of the crankshaft and we were golden.

As far as tightening the belt, we kept the tensioner bolt loose, turned the crank counterclockwise for 3 teeth on the cam sprocket and tightened it all up.

This was all per the Haynes Repair Manual. I recommend it.

I dont get this?? Is it supposed to be a DIY or are we supposed to congratulate you for following directions correctly? As for using an impact gun for the crank pulley, ive never had one crank pulley not come loose while using a breaker bar and chain wrench.

+1 on this. Ive only had 1 crank bolt come off using an impact gun, and it was a 2600 ft lb, 1" drive used for semi truck lug nuts.

i had once crank pulley split in 3 pieces trying to take it off using the honda tool :/
