Default sohc vtec clicking noise at low rpm engine bay.

when i drive at low rpm like at 1000 rpm to 2,500rpm, i get this clicking noise from the engine bay. sounds kinda like a valve tapping but not sure. i only hear it a low rpm at any gear but when passes like 2,500rpm i dont hear it anymore. wat can it be?

I had a clicking noise for a while in my car, did three valve adjustments and they never corrected it.
So when looking for other reasons, I took off my heatshield to my exhaust mani to see if it might have been a gasket leak. When I took it off, I found this..

NO more looking after that obviously!

It is normal thing for mani to brake like that... mine broke also on the SAME EXACT PLACE... try to visit some local Honda dealer... I think they had a recall for that...

or just leave it that way... nothing can happen

or buy some 4-2-1 header

oh and regarding the clicking noise... try not to drive the car below 2000 rpm cos it is not healthy!!! 2100 rpm should be the lowest point...

you can also try to get your valve lash adjusted

If you can't find it then do a valve clearance adjustment. If that doesn't solve it then buy a stethascope and try to isolate the problem area. Get back to us on this... Happy Tuning!!

explain.
- cos everything wears so much quicker than when you drive above 2000 rpm...
- the car hesitates a lot when accelerating from low rpm's...
- the car runs rich despite the fact it is cruising low rpm's (cos it needs much more power to pull it out of the cruise than when you are on 2000)...
- the car is NOT running smoothly...

Example...

when I was in the army, the only one who drove my EX was my wife (girlfriend then)... her mother owns a VW Jetta diesel and that was the only car my wife drove before Honda... and diesel engines do not need rpm's to accelerate and the redline on that Jetta was on 4800 rpm... so my wife learned to "take off" with like 1000 rpm and to shift on 2300-2400... I didn't know that at the time cos I was away and when I was home, I was driving the car so I wasn't able to see how she handles it...

When I came home first time, I changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs and tranny fluid just to be sure everything will be fine with my car while I was away cos you can't expect from a woman to remember that she has to exchange oil every 4000 miles...

When I got back home for good after 8 months, my wife made like 6000 miles, mainly highway driving (30 miles one-way to work so aprox 60 miles a day)...

So after I got pissed off that she didn't go to the mechanic to exchange the oil after 4000 miles, I got my hands on it...

I exchanged the oil (and I must say that this old oil was still in very good condition), filter and when I took out the plugs I was very very concerned... it seemed to me like my car had 300000 miles on it and that it fails to burnout fuel correctly (the car had aprox. 100000miles)... plugs were all moisty, dirty and most concerning WORN OUT... like I had 30.000 miles with them... the car was smoking like I had 20 year old locomotive and it was weak like 75 HP VW Golf...

So I immediately went to my local Honda-tech and wanted to know what was it... I was ready to do a swap immediately cos I want my car to be in 100% top-shape...

He didn't want to do a swap cos he wanted to see what was happening and why are the plugs so worn out... we had a deal that he will swap it if after another 5000 miles the same thing happens... we put in the new plugs (NGK ZFR5F11 like always) and that was it... first 100 miles it was like trying to get the 75 HP to act like 160 HP... but after 100 miles, after few visits to the redline the car started to breathe properly... never had that problem again... when I cruise, I cruise mainly 2200-2600... and the fact is that my wife did not drive the car in that period...

I was happy not having to go through all the swap-mess again but in the same time I was so pissed off still not being sure what happened... until one night... I got a bit drunk and called my wife to pick me up... After 2 miles of driving, I asked "is this how you drive all the time???" when she said YES, WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT all my worries gone away... when she takes off, rpm's fall to like 900... shifts at 2000-2500... so the car is caughing all the time when you push the pedal... the reason she said is that the car is too loud if she shifts on higher rpm... I drove that car for a year after that... never had any problems like that and still today, I see that car and the new owner who gives me thumbs up every time we meet...

And when I realize that I was ready to spend f***n 5000 on another swap it gives me creeps...

Honda is built for hi-revs and wants it, loves it and smiles when gets it...

Hmmm... just now remembering my old EX I realize that currently I drive stock D16Y7, and that it is the right time to do a swap... I think the planned November-swap is coming much much sooner cos this is SLOOOOW...

Anyway, if you feel like driving below 2000, it is your choice... your car, your decision... I know I won't... ever... never did... and never will...

yeah same here. the car do hesitate alot when i drive before 2000rpm and it dont feel healthy at all but i thought its the right way to drive it and save gas, but today when i shift at every 2500-3000 rpm, MUCH better result.

Just do it that way and you will thank me after some time... and you won't save any gas driving below 2000... maybe a galon on 300 miles if you are lucky... more likely you will lower the gas mileage...

and in best case... galon per 300 miles is just NOT WORTH IT
