So what kind of valvetrain was he running?
I'm basically planning on dropping that cam into my 1990 STD once I put a D16A6 in it.

No this is a non-Vtec cam.
Cams have extremely thick parkerization (grey coating) for proper break-in. Cams become slightly work-harden during break-in.
With proper break-in were is not a problem.
