Default Skunk2 intake manifold w/z6

Hey guys. Almost start up time for my EH9 (first time the car will be started since 2010 before I got it). I have installed a skunk2 intake manifold on my car since I got a great deal on it.

I'm now dealing with so much small stuff standing in my way before I can start this car, hopefully tomorrow. One of which is the PCV/breather box on the back of the block. On the stock manifold, the PCV valve sits between cylinders 1 and 2. Now it sits between 3 and 4, which puts it directly above the breather box and thus the stock hose will not reach/bend to the outlet.

This picture is upside down... Dam iPhone... or tinypic. ANYWHO, you can see what I mean about the location of my pcv valve.

Now I plan to run a simple catch can setup, and I'm wondering if I even need the PCV valve. I realize it is a check valve, and thus lets the flow of air only one direction, but is it really needed? Or can I just run the line off the the breather box straight to the catch can...

Nothing I have actually necessitates the catch can, but it was free and I figured I could make it work for just a few bucks worth of hose.
