Short Shift complications...need help
I just installed a Skunk2 short shift and a Prothane bushing kit on my '99 EX 4-door. It was feeling great at first. However, now it's clunking into the top of my resonator and putting it in 5th or reverse is a beast. I think with those two gears the bottom of the shifter is scraping the resonator. I'm sure I installed everything correctly, so what's the deal? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

do you have an aftermarket exhaust? if so, thats probably why. i think a lot of short shifters are designed considering only the stock exhaust. to solve the problem, you might try to lower your exhaust somehow, maybe by using longer rubber hangers. on some cars, there is a counterweight on the shift rod that touches the exhaust. you might also be able to bend that up, or cut it off entirely.

Indeed. I installed a B&M Short Throw, the ones NOTORIOUS for scraping against the exhaust and rattling your ears to death. Nothing happened on mine. No creaks, no rattles, no rubbing. Then again, I'm on stock exhaust. But I do see, if the diameter of the piping were to be larger, it should rub against it. Indeed, only way is to lower the exhaust in the mid-section.

i have 99-00 tanabe racing medalion on my 98 and when i put a short shifter in it did the same thing. i took it to an exaust shop and they heated and streched the hanger right there thus lowering it and voila pro-blame-o solved

Re: (Jimmy)
to be more accurate, the pipe right in front of the resonator. I am running a stock exhaust. I think installing an oversized rubber hanger would help. Do they sell such a thing? Or should I just go to muffler shop and be done with it?

Doesn't really matter what you do, the shifter is going to be chunking. Short shifters are junk!! Honda did a pretty good job from the factory. I had one and it was the worse thing I every had, so I put my stock one back in. Now I do like the bushings, they give you a more direct feel with each shift. They do cause a little more vibration, but that's OK. I would put the stock shifter back in with the shifter bushings.

Re: (spoonek9)
I paid good money, $86, for the shifter. Plus, I am really pleased with the feel and length of the throw. So I don't want to go back to the stock one. Anyway, I emailed Skunk2 and they said to bend the exhaust hangers to hold the exhaust piping away from the shift linkage. Anybody have any suggestions on the best way to go about doing this? Also, I found some extra long poly hangers for the exhaust. Any thoughts on how effective they would be with solving my problem?

Yes, completely sure. There just isn't enough clearance. I'm beginning to wonder if they gave me a shifter for a different model.

I had the same problem on stock exhaust. I took the heat shield off. then on the end of the shift linkage there was a weight and I put some vicegrips on it and bent it up towards the floor pan of the car and now its fine. I would see if the weight on the linkage is doing it first.
