shifter problems

my brother just recently got a 2000 civic dx hatch... the problem is that the shift is way toooooo lose, it is really loose, you pretty much do not have to apply any force to move it... and while in gear, it can move side to side like it is neutreal, what could be causing this problem?

check the shifter bushings, and check the 12mm bolt and nut to see if its tight...
