What do you guys do when you sell a car do you fix it up or do you sell it as is. I have a 99 Civic that needs a new rack and back strut.

The car is inspected for another year I just got it done but it leaks power steering fluid alot. I go through two bottles a day.

Depends if you need the car or not....and if you have the parts to fix them.

Would I get more money if I fixed it up and sold it or just sold as is?


I don't wanna lose money if I fix it and only sell it for 600 or so

Polluting 2 bottles a day would have me fixing it immediately, or at least deleting the p/s....then sell it for more.

Without fixing it, you are selling to a mechanic, or a person who knows what they are doing with these cars... for cheap.

Fix it, and your market opens up much more and you will have a less hagglers to deal with. People want a car which needs work (steering rack is a very invovled job IMO) for dirt.

Do you plan to allow test drives, you could end up with a non driveable car afterwards.

And you will have to disclose it as someone could drive off and get killed.

So it really comes down to this. Sell as is,for what you think will be $600.

Determine what the cost to fix will be, subtract that from what it would be worth, if the result is over $600 fix and sell.

If the result is under $600 sell as is.

If selling "as is" I would even list the issue on the bill of sale.

BTW in under 3 months your $600 will be gone in power steering fluid costs.

Exactly.

Not many buyers want a fixer-upper unless they're experienced mechanics or Honda buffs. Sometimes a few hundred $$ spent in the right place will pay dividends. It'll be easier to sell when fixed and you'll get more out of it than it costs to fix.

For example, I bought a 98 Civic EX for $1000 because it had a few cosmetic and mechanical issues which the previous owner couldnt/didnt want to deal with. He had been trying to sell the car for 4 months with no luck...i may have lowballed him, but w/e. Anyway, I replaced the oil pan and valvecover gaskets, as well as a few interior pieces (cost me $186 total) and cleaned it...I sold the car 2 weeks later for $3k.

Yea I mean the car needs a head gasket i think as well....


I used that permanent head gasket fix about a year ago, (20,000 miles ago). But it doesnt overheat or use any coolant anymore so may be fine now?

Yea Im selling because I found a 2003 Mazda protege with 16000 miles for 4400 bucks

If you have the know how then fix it yourself. Used parts and careful shopping will pay off in the end.

Try to sell it as it is letting the buyer know in advance if u dont get many hits on it fix.it and try again

Personally, If I was going through 2 bottles of PS fluid daily I would've deleted it by now, But that's just me.

People love these cars, and with current gas prices the market couldn't be any better for someone selling a fuel efficient car. That being said, Struts are cheap online and a power steering delete only takes a little time out of your day. You'll have a much easier time selling a car with no power steering than you will trying to sell a car that needs two bottles of fluid a day.

TL:DR - I would fix the strut and get rid of power steering DEPENDING on where the leak is.

Yea I was thinking about it. The rack seals by the inner tie rods are just spitting it all out.
