no i'm not talking about the timing belt, my distributor... i have to adjust the ignition timing but i don't know where it's supposed to be cause it's only differential by two degrees. i mean is it safe to just turn it little bit at a time and keep trying it?

What do you mean by "trying it"? There's no way to tell if you're within spec other than by using a timing light. You can find them for less than $25, or just borrow a friend's or neighbour's.

by "trying it" i meant starting the engine... so then whether it starts or not it's probably not safe to run the engine if i'm not within spec?

I wouldn't try rotating the distributor without a timing light because how would you know what the setting is? A suggestion is once you have the timing set and you have to take the distributor off for any reason, you could mark the point where the distributor meets the head if you haven't purchased a timing light by then. It won't be 100% accurate but it will do.

unless you have the dizzy 180 out it will run i perfer to star with it centered and le the car warm up then turn it a little and see how it sound then turn it the other way and see how it sounds the car should idle around 750 fully warm so check your tach and see what it's at after you move the dizzy.
don't take the bolts off just loosen them so you can turn the dizzy
(edit)
tis is only good for driving the car for a little while (it's old school)
i would get a timing light before i go beating on the car just to make sure you are with in spec

hook the timing light to a ground. with the other cord hook it to the spark plug wire closest to the timing belt. Point it down at the crank pulley and line up all the pretty lines.
