Ripping apart a SOHC

Ripping apart a SOHC
Over the next few months i will be building my sohc vtec in my 96 civic ex. I am building a turbo kit and want the engine to be able to handle this.
First off what is the engine? All i know is 1.6l SOHC Vtec in a 96 ex
Second what internals do i need to change to handle boost and any recommended name brands? I am planning on just changing out pistons and rods but is there more i need to do? This is my daily driver about 50-70 miles a day. I want it to be able to handle 13-17psi boost at the most and 5-8 for normal driving.
Any help will be appreciated

Are YOU doing this building yourself, or are you piecing together these parts & having a trained professional do this building?
It looks to be very dangerous for the first statements by the asking of the second question.

Re: Ripping apart a SOHC (civicgsir)
Im doing it mainly with the help of a friend. I have experience working with v8's but have never gotten into the import scene until here recently. I am just looking for the right quality parts to build my engine to hold boost. I think it is a d16y8 but once again i am not sure. I am new to imports not engines. So what pistons/rods or more do i need?

Yes its a y8.
You'll want to do new rods, and go with a set of low compression pistons, if you have money to throw around, have the block re-sleeved, the rotating assembly balanced, and get at least a clean-up port job and valve job on the head.

eagle rods and pistons, resleeve it, valve springs and retainers, pushrods, racing cam and cam gear. the list keeps going and going. but why not go with a b series engine>???? potential is so much better. But some people like the fact they can build a 300hp SOHC. good luck.

Well since you have worked with V8s I am sure you should be familiar with Eagle and Crower. They make rods and pistons for Hondas and Domestic V8 engines. Then you can have a machine shop do the block work such as re-sleeve and or honing the block. You can also get ACL bearings kit.

Try again, junior .
Anyhow. The Y8 intake manifold is already great for boost, the head flows well enough that it won't be an impediment to 13-15psi and you won't need to rev high enough to require custom valvetrain components. What you will want to do is get a standalone engine management system like Hondata or Motec or Neptune so that you can adequately tune the setup you put together.
As far as enigne internals, Arias and Eagle both make great pistons for your application. If you're looking to save money but gain the benefits of forged pistons anyway, the Suzuki Vitara G16 pisons will fit the bill for far cheaper than aftermarket alternatives. Eagle rods with ARP rod bolts should round out the bottom end enough to handle your preferred boost levels.
Just to warn you, though: at 5-7 psi you'll be running a mid 14 which isn't very fast for the investment you'll have in the car. At 15-17 psi you'll probably be deep in the 13's if you can find traction. Boost is an addiction and the "need" to turn that little **** is not easilly ignored. Tuning is imperitive. If nothing else, find a great tuner in your area and get the engine fully prepared for the boost levels you'll be running.
Good luck. This isn't a whole lot different than V8 performance. I'm sure you'll be fine .

Re: (GreenCivic1142)
What kind of compression rating should i be looking for with the pistons?
Ill let yall know how everything turns out
Thank God i found this place i was going to spend the money on stupid junk like ricer aesthetic crap.

You think a BOOSTED engine will get you any better gas milage? Now before you all say "with the right tuning you could still get good gas milage on a boosted engine," I know. Ricey says he gets 30mpg on his boosted y7. But HE tuned it. I don't know if a shop could tune a car for the kind of power you want AND get that kinda gas milage. If you want that honda gas milage, keep the car stock. Otherwise your gonna be spending about the same on gas as you did with your 502. Especially running 5-7 psi. (93 octane is expensive)

I was getting 8mpg with a 454 on 35s and my friend had the 502 and he was riding 40s and getting 5-7 mpg. So if i got 25 on 5-7 psi id be happy. Went from a 7.4l to a 1.6l

Turbo it first, then build it when you're bored with ~200whp.
My guess is you've never had a turbo Honda. Run 10 psi on a Greddy or Apexi kit and I'll bet you'll be happy for a while.

For normal driving, it should be relatively easy to stay out of boost, so getting good mileage is still achievable....

I get 32MPG on the GREDDY BLUE BOX.
You know, that blue thing you all say sucks?
