Removing little rubber strip from the rear wheel wells?? A bit of rust
Today I pulled back the little rubber trim piece that is in the wheels wells on the rear of my 99 coupe. I noticed a little bit of surface rust under it but I put the trim back on.
Would it be better to remove the strip all together? I'm assuming the water gets in there and then has to place to go causing a bit of surface rust. Not bad at all, but definitely there.
Will this rust spread? or should it stop once I remove the rubber piece?
Any info appreciated thanks.

My car had that stuff on there when I got it. There was also a small sliver of rust on my passenger side wheel well, right above the rubber piece. After that, it has been all down hill. Both of my rear panels are rusted through. But even by taking them off, they are still going to get worse. Rust spreads no matter what. But leaving them on will just make things far worse over time.

Those strips are supposed to be taken of by the dealer once the car is sold. A friend of mine who is a sales representative for honda told me this. He said that dirt+water will get in there and over time it will contribute to the so called honda rust. so rip them off ppl! it looks kinda rice anyway haha

Recently removed mine and I have a bit of surface rust as well. What would be the best way to remove this and stop it from spreading? Sand it down? Then what?

your chance to save your car from rusting thru is just remove them, keep them off and take care of the rust before it takes your quarter panels. sand it, prime and paint it with touch up.

We are talking about the thin rubber strip that is in the rear wheel wells on the quarter panels. If you mean the front fender lining by "wheel well thingy", that is not what we are talking about.

Re: Removing little rubber strip from the rear wheel wells?? A bit of rust
Hi everyone I am new to the site and have a problem, hope someone could help. I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX with 77k miles on it. I love this car and want it for a long time. Today I noticed an orange like streak in the rear tire wheel on the driver side. I do not want this car to rust away. Can someone help me on what to do so I could keep the body in good shape.
thank you for your time

sand-prime-paint-clearcoat = rust-b-gone
once clear coated it woudl be recommend to buff out the uneven texture to make it look factory (but non professional will be difficult to match up to factory paint)

Re: Removing little rubber strip from the rear wheel wells?? A bit of rust
rust removers are anti-oxidizing agents.. they work by trying to bring the oxygen under the rust to the surface there by trying to reduce the amount or spread of rust.. Nothing works better than good-ole elbow grease and sanding it down and repainting.
if you actually sand down to bare metal, and remove all rust then prime, paint and clear coat it is doubtful that you will have a problem with rust at all.. but if you miss a little spot of rust it will still spread like cancer...
If you sand down too far into the metal bondo works great for smoothing out the surface and keeps oxygen from getting to the rust as well (this is what I did with my trans-am over 90% of the surface.. would have worked great if that tire wall hadn't decided that the passenger side of my car looked good to eat.
