Default Removing inner tie rod ball joint from steering gearbox/push rod...how the f*ck?

I've read the Helms section on it and it doesn't seem to work. 1st off Helms tells you to use a 19 mm wrench to grip the flat spots (which are tiny!!!) on the push rod when in fact the push rod requires a much larger wrench, I'm using an adjustable. Anyone ever done this? I'm having trouble getting in there and getting enough leverage on anything. I also can't get a wrench to grip the flat spots on the push rod, it just slides off...? Please help me!!!!!!

You backed off the lock nut right? after that use an adjustable on the tie rod end and a wrench on the gearbox rod. it should come off really easy.

I've already done that. I'm talking about removing the tie rod from the gear box.

You need to take the inner tie rod off of the outer tie rod?

If that is what you need, you will need to spray the inner tie-rod nut with some pb blaster. (btw.. you might want to put the rod on a vice grip. ) Use the 19mm open ended wrench on the nut and your adjustable wrench on the outer tie-rod. use the force of both wrenches to take the nut off.

to remove the inner tie rod put the rack on the vice then remove the boot covering the inner tie rod, take channel locks and loosen the inner tie rod it's that easy.. also install new locking washer on and hammer them back on the tads.... don't have a pick but if you look at it you would understand..

how did you get in there to loosen the inner tie rod? i have a huge wrench(28-29?) i could not get any leverage b/c it was tight up there.
any tips?

I put a vice grip on the shaft of the steering gear box (the big silver rod). I put it on the flats as not to damage the smooth surface of the rod. I used this is leverage so that when i torqed the inner tie rod it wouldn't also torqe the gearbox shaft. I then put a large adjustable wrench on the inner tie rod and proceeded to unscrew it. It's very simple and easy when two people do it. One holds the vice grips and the other does the wrench. Once you break it loose it's easy. ITS CRUCIAL that the ps gearbox doesn't get torqed.

thanks I'll try that.
I still don't know if I can get a good grip with the wrench on the inner tie rod. there just isn't any room. did you remove anything? axle or swaybar?

Nope, you can do it. And if you can't then remove the intake, that frees up a ton of room. And in case I didn't make it clear, go at it from the tope. Also reove the boot. And I turned the steering wheel as to position it so I can come at it from the top.
