Radio swap question
Hey all
My friend has a 98 Civic and the radio died. He want's another stock deck so he can keep the lower tape deck. I have the stock one from my 2000 I was going to give him. Will it work? I remember reading something about the dome light or locks run through the radio on the 96-98s. I found conflicting info when I searched...
TIA

Re: Radio swap question (ekhonda87)
So will the 2000 radio work if the car has keyless?
Is there a difference between the 96-98 harness and the 99-00?
I'm just looking to get him something stock (re: cheap) that will work.

You'll need to make a custom harness to put a '99+ radio into a car that's a '98 or older. The plugs are different.
And yes, the stock keyless brain is in the stock radio on '96-'98s. You can see the black antenna on the back of the deck.
If you remove it, you will not have working keyless unless you use the harness that connects the stock radio and another. Then you'd have to hide the stock radio in the dash somewhere. It can get really tight.
If you unplug the radio you will need to reprogram the remote(s) after you reinstall the radio too. Here are the instructions for that.
I can't remember which is it, but I think we looped a wire to make the dome light keep working. It's been awhile since that happened though, so I'm sort of foggy on it.
