Quick question about d16z6 motor burning oil
I have a d16z6 obd1 motor in my 92 si hb. When I bought the car it was buring oil at vtec. I figured it was a valve guide seal or somthing in the head because when my friend and I did a compression check, the cylnder closest to the distributor was off from the rest of them by roughly 25. I bought a Dave Hickman head which had been rebuilt the whole nine yards and swapped it on for the old one and figured that it would solve the problem of burning oil. I got the rebuild gasket kit from honda and replaced all the gaskets properly but the motor still burns just as much oil as before. We did a compression test after installing the new head and it read 150 accross the board. Can sombody please help me out if they have any idea what could be going wrong. I have smog at the end of this month and am totally stumped what it could be.

probably bad piston rings. mine had the same issue untill i changed the rings. i would think it would have low compression too. did you do a leakdown test?

There are no fluids that have leaked from any of the gaskets. I cleaned the motor off after we put the head on, and so far no fluids noticeable except for some coolant on the transmission housing, but i think it was just excess from the resevuar being too full. There are no engine codes that pop up, and I don't have a problem with blue smoke until I hit vtec at 4500 rpm. The amount of oil that is burning is quite sufficient. I would say about a quart a day if I get on it all day long.

When we took the head of the car the only cylninder that had black stuff crusted to the piston was the one closest to the vtec solenoid. The filter was changed on the vtec solenoid in the process of swapping the head along with the gasket that goes between the head and the solenoid.

If there was too much oil pressure running in the motor could oil possibly pass through the pcv valve and into my intake manifold?

thats not what a leakdown test is. a leakdown test checks for bad piston rings.
here's something i found online:
A leak-down test is a check of the amount and location of the leakage from a cylinder. A
special gauge is used, together with a source of compressed air. The air is vented into the
cylinder, and the gauge measures the percentage of air that leaks out of the cylinder. A
simplified procedure:
- Bring the engine to operating temperature.
- Remove the spark plug and attach the gauge.
- Bring the piston in the cylinder to exactly top dead center on the compression stroke.
- Introduce the air and read the gauge.
- Record the readings and move to the next cylinder.

wow, thanks for the info. I was sorta wondering what exactly conssited of a leak down test. I know you can get them performed for 25 bucks or so at your local mechanic.

If your only concern is "smog", if you'd wish to drive to Riverside, CA, I can hook you up with a shop that's "Test Only" that does illegal smogging.

Re: Quick question about d16z6 motor burning oil (Equilibrium)
Ya have a leak down test done on each cylinder.Had sim problem caused by pcv valve hose being bad.so for quick self check remove valve leave hose if not cracked .plug hose off with something that wont get sucked in like 14mm bolt so no vac leak.check upper and lower hose ?rem oil may still be in manifold............good luck''''''

thanks for the thought, but I need to get the smog done here in the bay because my county is one of the stupid counties that requries the test only done in this area.
