question about lma's and ticking sounds...
ok so after MUCH research i have yet to come to a conclusion on my ticking sound. i've looked into tranny threads, axle threads, injector threads, and stuff about lma's. my situation is funny though...unusual compared to the rest of what i read.
it completely comes and goes(the key here)...very random. doesn't seem to be weather related at all...it was pretty damn cold a couple weeks ago and it ran fine. when it makes the noise it seems like its right in front of me(lead me to injectors)...at about 2-4000 rpms...very loud in first and quieter as the gears go up. i almost feel the car is physically louder when its doing it(could be mental). when it doesn't make the noise the car runs like a goddamn dream...i don't want to get out of it. when it makes it...it not horrible but i feel like it is hurting performance(could be totally mental who knows).
00 b16...running p2t...stock air box with drop in and 2.5 cat back.
any ideas?

when doing the listening test is it best to do it at operating temps...or will cold do? i know it tends to always make noise(s) when its cold so i can assume warm is better?

well both....
you know ur valves are out of wack when the tick cold and dont when your car is warm....or they tick all the time..
when was your last valve adjustment???
i say do the easy things first then if it still happening then keep going bigger and bigger...

exactly what i was thinking...i was hoping for some simple check-up type things i could do to try and pinpoint the problem. i will try the screwdriver this afternoon...thanks!

Re: question about lma's and ticking sounds... (2000CX)
if the sound goes away after VTEC engages then i would have to say its you LMA's. My b16a was doing the same thing( sounds like something rolling around and tapping under the valve cover) only at idle till like 4500 rpm then when light on the throttle it goes away when VTEC engages. It came and went but is very annoying and also made me think that it was hurting performance, in which it was not and was just the ticking making me think that.
The reason it makes that ticking is because the LMA's has a spring in it and when it gets worn out, the cap on the top of the LMA wants to catch on the sidewalls of the LMA causing your rocker under you VTEC lobe to slap causing that LOUD tapping noise. The LMA's purpose is to keep pressure on that rocker to hold it to the cam lobe but when it fails it doesn't return up and causes a gap between the lobe and the rocker causing a slapping noise on that rocker.....
Simple solution replace LMA's with ITR or CTR ones and get valves readjusted and i bet you will have a nice purring motor minus the regular honda tick....
There is also a thread floating around about prelude LMA's with the use of spacers because the prelude ones are much cheaper.....

Might as well replace all 8 while your at it.
this is a ITR one you can get a your local Acura dealership but might be able to find cheaper online.

Re: question about lma's and ticking sounds... (photec3)
take a screwdriver and put it on top of your valve cover while it is on your valve cover put your ear on the handle of the screwdriver and listen for ticks and what not on each different set of valves...
of course do this when your car is idling...
it pretty much focuses the sound directly to the valves..so you can distinguish sounds of rikki tikki tavi......and not other sounds that might not be the valves...
