Default question about different engine oils

Ok... i am very gd with other parts of the car apart from the engine... So even basic things like oil changes and what to run get me confused as i dont want to do anything wrong.

I have a standard B16a2 engine. I checked the oil level today and it is shockingly low. I only just got the car so i am not sure what oil to run... Also would i have to drain all the oil before topping it up?

If so how would i go about doing this?

And what oil is reccomended for use on this engine and what do the differnt numbers mean..

Sorry about all these newb questions but i want a better understnading of everything.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Do you know if theres regluar or synthetic in there?

If not I'd say just drain it out and put in all the same type of oil, just to be sure

I'm not trying to be a dick but if you don't know how to, go to like a gas station and get it done, but watch him so you know how to do it next time.

I'm only saying that because its not that expensive ($20) and I don't want to you to accidently loosen the wrong bolt or something

But if someone here feels like giving a tutorial with pics, by all means go ahead. I'm just too lazy

go to your local car parts store and look for a service manual. I dont know if you guys across the pond have the same ones we do but here in the states the Helms manual is top choice. It provides great intstructions with pics for tons of actions, and its model specific so you wont have the figure out what part on the engine pictured corresponds to your engine. its a great thing to have.

1. jack the front of the car up (use jackstands to hold car, not the jack alone)
2. take off oil cap on valve cover
3. take out bolt in oil pan (have something under it to catch the oil).
4. remove oil filter
5. put some oil on finger and rub on rubber seal around new oil filter.
6. install new oil filter.
7. put plug back in oil pan.
8. put car back on the ground
9. fill engine with proper amount of new oil
10. put cap back on.
11. check under car for leaks
11. start car and let run for a few mins, or drive it somewhere
12. check oil level to make sure its good
13. take old oil to autozone and make them dispose of it.

make sure to check and see that the old oil filters gasket is completely off the block or else there could be some problems.

so what are you good at carwise?

also, if your car has a plastic crush washer on the drain bolt, you might want to replace it with every oil change

Alright I'll try to help.

Ok lift up your car and remember to use jack stands and not just your jack, so you don't die

underneath, there will be the oil pan which looks like this

The "#1" on the pic is where the oil drain plug will be (where the oil comes out from). The bolt is a 17mm, loosen it and be ready with a pan for the oil to drain into

Also you can take off the oil cap on the engine (helps the oil flow out better)

(borrowed from LuserKid's Seafoam how to. thanks)

Next change the oil filter. Sorry I can't find pics of where it is on the block. But its on the firewall side of the engine and underneath the intake manifold.

Looks like this

loosen it, remove it. let the oil drain out from both where the oil filter and the drain plug bolt you just removed

Before you put on a NEW filter, put some oil on the gasket of the NEW filter with your finger, then thread the ol filter back on, tighten the drain plug with a new crush washer back up and put oil in.

I probably forgot a small detail which I know HT is will love to correct

5w 30 is a weight or viscosity of oil, and its what is recommended for most honda 4 cyl engines. everyone has their own opinion on what brand is the best. personally, I run mobil one full synthetic 5w 30.

the lower the #, the easier the engine will start because of its viscosity. 5w 30 means that a room temp., it will be 5weight and when its at running temp., it will be at 30 weight. Hence, the lower the weight of the oil at room temp., the easier it will be to crank over. If you live where it is cold, you might wanna consider 0 weight, or 0w 30. Try to find out if the guy before had synthetic in, if he did, run it. If not, get a syntec blend or just regular oil.

i am going to drain the oil completly... Would you reccomend using synthetic or just regular oil.
Right now in London the temp ranges from 3-12 degrees C. what would you reccomend for that? 5w30 or 0w30? Keep in mind the weather warms up in 3 months

Just use 5W30 for that temp.
