Default question about catalytic converter..

aiite i got a 97 civic hatchback CX. and as yall know the CX doesnt come with a cat on the bottom cuhz its more built into the stock header. but i swapped to a obd1 jdm d15b. now i am plannin on swapping to a obd2 sohc vtec. my question is do i have to have a cat that matches the motor ? or can i have any cat as long as its obd2? or ANY obd1 or obd2 cat that is still in good condition will work? i live in CA and i want to be able to pass ref and smog and all that other bullshit.. and some ppl say junkyards dont sell cats is that true cuhz somethin bout illegal to sell used cats?

if you are going to put a d16y8 with stock header and want to put a stock cat you are going to have to get your exhaust cut and shortened.. to make room for the cat.. most places will do it for $20-40..

junk yard don;t sell cats because they sell them to platinum farmers..
basicly cats have platinum in them and they are worth more then they can sell to the public..

if your puttin in an obd2 engine, you'll have to put in an obd2 cat cuz there is an o2 sensor in the cat.....obd1 cat's don't have the sensor and you'll trip the CEL

i know it sucks out there with that carb BS.. but you might want to take a chance with a used cat.. and if it fails get a new one.. just if you get one new be sure you get the same one you got used.. the flanges are on different angles for different years.. but since you are cutting you exhaust to make it fit you can go with any of them.. just have to stick with the one you get
